I’ve something that’s been bugging me. I used to briefly debate another great poster, who seemed to be an elderly gentleman like Burt and John Garfield. Around the same time. I joined in 2012. I used to enjoy reading his content too. But I can’t for the life of me think of his username. I just wondered if you had any idea. I appreciate that I’ve given you nothing to work with. But can you think of any other elderly type poster with great knowledge, who used to post on the Classic. Thanks.
Very sorry to hear this. Burt brought unique perspective to this site. A man who lived so much of boxing history. RIP
The more senior members of the forum who come to mind for me are DJ Anders and @Richard M Murrieta but I don’t know if that’s of whom you are thinking. Both of them saw Mozart perform live in concert.
Klompton was the guy, so look up the combination of Klompton-burt bienstock. He was pretty savage with Burt, but that's to be expected. Klompton is Klompton. Steve Compton's not the same character in person, but that confrontational "Take no prisoners!" is his posting style going back at least two decades here, and unfortunately keeps getting him in trouble. I don't consider him to be any kind of troll. He's gone after me as well, but I don't mind any and that doesn't deter me from reading his stuff. The guy's an obsessive-compulsive researcher and scholar, a vital asset to boxing history.
Loudon, I have to defer to @Saintpat here, as I pretty much was AWOL from this site between 2012 and 2022.
Oh yes, I knew who it was. And I loved his book on Greb. Still, how wrong he was on Burt (I know people who knew him personally) makes me wonder how wrong he might have been on other matters.
Yeah, I think you know exactly who he is. Seamus, did you also read Smokestack Lightning by @Stonehands89 (Springs Toledo)?
Well, they published around the same time, so competition was involved. But Springs, although also a compulsive researcher is also a stylish writer who's far more diplomatic, and a long published author on subjects other than boxing. I was far more friendly and more familiar with him, and admire him tremendously as a fine person and true gentleman. He was very close with Joe Rein, and penned an extremely articulate post expressing great feeling upon the passing of "johngarfield."
