rip great trainer and boxing analyst. never changed his mind on things or talked a bit of **** like other great trainers most notably dundee and steward
Saw it in the paper today, and they don't normally print anything on boxing anymore. They mentioned a lot of the fighters he trained but did not mention some others such as Harold Weston, Rodrigo Valdes, Jorge Ahumada, Jerry Quarry and he even taught Oscar Bonavena how to jab against Ali. That alone was an achievement. When thinking of him commentating I always think of one of the great lines when asked by the announcer, "Gil, what was your feeling when one of your fighters was going against a southpaw?" Gil was quik and succinct with, "All southpaws should be drowned at birth!" Laughed my arse off. RIP, Gil. Scartissue
It really makes me sad that not only did we lose one of the Greats, But I was also asked by Ring 8 to do the Eulogy for him But I can't. I have to Ring Announce at the Arena in Philly tonight and then in Bally's on Saturday night. My thoughts and prayers will be with all his loved ones.
A funeral mass for Gil Clancy will be held this Monday at 9:45 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church in Malverne. We would like to have as many boxing people as possible to be present, as we will give Gil a proper send off with a Eulogy and a Bell Ceremony either at the Church or at the St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.. Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church 65 Wright Avenue Malverne, NY 11565-2146 Henry
Great trainer, awesome color man and a class act from the golden age of boxing... They certainly don`t make them like him anymore... His analysis was always spot on and without being wordy .
Damn, just rewatched Leonard-Hearns 1 and was thinking how great his commentary was so I searched his name here to see if there's a thread on his top class commentary to find out he's died. RIP
Grew up watching Tim Ryan and Cil Clancy call fights on CBS......... "He threw that right hand right down the pike." "Everytime he lands that punch he sticks around and waits for the reciept." ........those were some of Gil's Clancyisms, which I still to this day find myself repeating watching current fights........the inner child in me remembering fondly having heard Gil make that call during my childhood. Many thanks to Gil Clancy for such wonderful memories, may he RIP.
A real New Yorker. If I am not mistaken Gil was a high school teacher in addition to his boxing addiction. RIP.
I went to the funeral yesterday. I left my house in New Jersey at about 6:30 AM and got the church about 7:45 AM, and the service started at 9:45 AM. Bob Arum and Tim Ryan also came as well as many other boxing people. Tim opened the serivice with a Eulogy, as he talked about his days with Gil. After the service we all drove approx. 18 miles to the grave site where the President of Ring 8, Bob Duffy gave a short talk before introducing me. I then gave a graveside Eulogy, talking about Gil's life & career and then I gave the "9" count in Celebration of the life he gave us all. After that I was greeted by his hold family, thanking me for everything.
