The Petronelli brothers took Hagler from beginner to champion, toughest thing for trainers and managers to do. Most inherit a fighter after he left another trainer, or get a good prospect coming from amateurs. They also had to fight problem of coming out of small boxing venue, Brockton, and going up against New York and Vegas managers. Hagler will probably be weighing in through interviews on this.
Certainly unusual, but hardly unprecedented, as the Clancy-Griffith association then in the forefront of 1960s and 1970s boxing demonstrated. Small venue perhaps, but still the home of The Rock, which certainly couldn't hurt when it came to opening doors. (And if Marciano had lived and collaborated with the Petronellis on Hagler, maybe Marv would have gotten an expedited shot at Monzon before Carlos retired.) No doubt. Some interesting feedback to anticipate.
The funeral was attended by about 100 and was in Newton, which is located just outside of Boston. Pat Petronelli's casket was at the front of the chapel. At the end of the eulogy, Marvin got up from his seat and walked down the aisle... He kissed the casket. ...There's nothing in this world like loyalty between men. Especially the fightin' kind.
Didnt he carry Marcianos' vibrators around the country for him and later blow the Whistle on the Rock about it?
