racism against russian/ex.soviet/eastern bloc fighters???

i think its racism. americans (and lots of general boxing fans) dont just want to see a good technical boxing match. they want an exciting one.

euro fighters are generally well schooled. but they usually refrain from doing any infighting and imploy a tight guard.

it is very effective, but its not THAT exciting! you wont get any barrera vs morales/corrales vs castillo bouts.

another "negative " factor is that the eastern euro guys are usually very down to earth people. they are not wannabe thugs or super charmers. they do their job and get on with their lives.

and since pro boxing is a form of entertainment, they will always finish second to more "colourfull" western fighters.

I thought the same thought for a while. The simple fact is no matter how good the eastern block boxers are, they will never get any recognition simply because there is no money in it.

The returns for hyping up and promoting an even average US boxer is greater.

That is why they are ignored. It has little to do with there boxing skill, but the fact that they don't create big money.

 

I liked Liyahovich(spell check), but he f'd up. Haven't seen but would like to see that guy that just KO'd Chris Byrd recently, Alex Povetkin.

 

There is definitely a dislike of the European fighters outside of Europe, don't know if it's race or style related but Europe's dominance in boxing is only going to become more apprent, esp. at HW, so people better get used to it or find another sport to watch. American sports media is so desperate to discredit European boxers that they constantly criticize the lack of talent in Euro dominated divisions and over-hype any American with half a chance of making an impact, ie. Brock,Lacy.

 

This is a natural phenomenon and occurs on both sides. Obviously a black guy from the states will support the black athletes who dominated the sport of boxing. Its part of their culture and they have pride for what their athletes accomplished. But to be real, I dont think theres much racism against the Soviet guys. The bottom line is that the soviet guys are white and the majority of U.S boxing fans are white, the soviet guy are keeping the great white hope theory alive and U.S boxing fans are fine with that.

i agree with that everyone supports their own fighters etc.

but the whole white hope idea is dead, because if you look at heavyweight, if anything there seems to be a search for a black hope.

there is no need to hope for anything when your on top

 

Russia is a well known haven for targeting minorities...Its a breeding ground for neo Nazis. Have you been watching the news man... If you are an ethnic minority there they will beat you to death ..in plain daylight

 

I liked Vitali form 02-04 because he was exciting and knew how to take a punch and give one. The new crop of heavyweights are so ****ing boring aside from Wlad and Peter, its a strain on my eyes watching trying to watch some of them fight.

 

The top fighters deserve to be watched regardless of race. I think some ( but not all ) black or Hispanic boxing fans are uncomfortable with the X-Soviets doing well in boxing. The X- Soviets are not only doing well at heavyweight. They are winning titles in the lower weights too. Fight News has an X-Soveit as their #1 guy at jr middle ( 154 ) and bantam ( 118 ).

For the most part the X-Soviet fighters show up in shape, and don't embarass their sport by acting like buffons. Boxing needs fighters like this.

 

I've been pretty outspoken on the Eastern European heavyweight invasion so I wanna ask a question. Why do Americans have to like the Eastern European fighters? Why can't we just choose what we want without being called racist? I acknowledge the talent and abilities of the Eastern Euro fighters but I find them to be boring and mechanical with the personalities to match. I know they've taken over the heavyweight division. I know they can fight like a son of a *****. So what though? Doesn't mean I have to embrace them. **** that.

american I can promise you one thing blacks are by far the most

That's fine everybody's entitled to that opinion but I think what the original poster was getting at is that there's no need to be disrespectful towards them like so many people are.
