You sound like some juvenile. I was THERE in the 80s and trust me, the guys you mention are every bit as mediocre, and every bit as "unmotivated" as the HWs of today. Tubbs was, in fact, MORE out of shape than most HWs today. Bruno and Williams had glass jaws, Stewart was a joke, Spinks didn't even belong in the division, and Douglas and Thomas were gross unachievers who were also frequently out of shape. Berbick was a decent fighter, but no better than a Chagaev or Haye, and probably worse. Tucker was a solid contender, but like Tubbs he had a coke problem and really never reached his potential. Ruddock doesn't even belong with this crew, as he didn't really become a contender until the early 90s when the division had improved considerably with the addition of Holyfield, Bowe, Mercer, Morrison and Ruddock himself. People ***** like hell about today's division, but trust me, we were doing the same in the mid 80s. And from where I sit, today's division looks slightly better than what I remember from the 80s. At worst, it's the same.
Tony Tubbs/Tim Witherspoon would have made mincemeat out of everyone in the division outside of Wlad. Even while being overweight, the 80's heavyweight division knew how to box.
So it's either one extreme or the other? Neither is it the worst nor the best. It's Mediocre at best with absolutely legit champions who would fare well against anyone in history. It's the lacking competition that pulls this division down so bad.
The HW division in the 80's was the biggest pile of dog**** boxing has ever seen. Trevor Berbick, Bonecrusher Smith, Greg Page, Tony ****ing Tubbs,I know they are all considered ATG's now, but if you were around and watching boxing back then then you know how comedic that really is. Tyson's road to the undisputed HW title couldn't have been easier. And then when he beat LHW Spinks and Flabby Tits Holmes he became immortal.
i assume you mean from 00-10 it is behind the 70's and the 90's. but it aint much worse or much better than any other era. we have 3 great fighters in vitali, wlad and haye. and atleast one of them 3 would be competitive in any other era.
I think this era is on about the same level as the 90s, i don't believe the 70's stack up well with any era, but we had some really great fight in the 70s...
Even his time at cruiserweight is very overrated. He was a champion for less than 4 months with 2 world title fights.
