No it won't...it's all over the Villa forums. I think you can safely say that Gavin has lost a hell of a lot of support from his own city folk tonight, albeit through no fault of his own.
It wouldn't surprise me now, to be honest. He looks like a shining star to me and could go all the way, but after tonight I suspect our lot will turn out in force to support the opponent. I remember years ago when either Benn or Eubank was fighting at the NEC and there was a major riot after the fight, can't for the life of me remember which fight it was but it made the national headlines anyway. The point being most of the perpetrators were wearing Blues shirts....funny thing was I watched it at home and thought "hang on a minute I went to school with that ****.....he's a Villa fan, and that ****s a Chelsea fan, and that **** doesn't even like football :huh" I bumped into the Villa fan a few years later and asked him what the **** he was playing at and he said it was purely because when it hit the headlines that lot would get the blame. Good tactics I'll admit but you'd have to slit my throat before you'd get me wearing blue and white.
Why is everyone so hard on Degale, what did he do wrong? It takes some boxers a few fights to adjust to the pros and I'm sure he will sort out his jab and the other bad habits. Anyway, I'd rank them in this order : Saunders - bit too eager but loads of potential Degale - a few bad habits but also shows potential Gavin - maybe let the occasion get to him All in all they were decent pro debuts
Gavin (decent performance against a tough debut opponent) Saunders (got the job done nicely, good body work. Defence will improve in time) Degale (too busy trying to look cool and flashy and forgot he has a job to do. needs to get the mirror out of the dressing room and concentrate on the fight rather than admire his own body)
If we are considering result and performance then I would say Gavin, Jeffries, Saunders, DeGale. Gavin didn't have the firepower but he showed the best stamina, technique, skill and I liked the fact that he really dug for the stoppage. Gavin looks the best where as the other 3 were quite sloppy in parts.
Saunders, Gavin and De Gale last Saunders looked measured and he was turning his punches in well and putting some behind them, he also conducted himself like an adult. Gavin looked a bit Kevin Mitchell-ish at times and he was open to shots but he got the job done and he showed a good engine. Degale came in thinking he was Muhammad Ali and when he started boxing he came out looking like Fraudley Harrison. He needs to get that amateur rushing punches style out of his system and learn to sit down on his shots instead of still throwing shots to score points on the computer like in the amateurs. This is all new to him and he has to learn his trade so give the kidd a chance and stop the wankerism on this site.
