liston was close to foreman in strength and punching power, but much better technician,he would pick him apart with his straighter and more presice punches.
the thing is a lot of people don't realize how strong was liston, and what a big frame he had.his hands, wrists, elbows are as big if not bigger than almost any modern super heavy, plus his wide shoulders, and those factors are indicators of a man's size...add to that he didn't lift weights or use peds,i mean it's ridiculous how some people compare him with holyfield in size, who was 215 with a pharmacy of peds and hgh,and pretty hard wight lifting regime.liston was a scary dude,if he had some benefits of modern peds and training methods,he would have been frightening strong
Dick Saddler trained them both and told me Sonny was every bit as strong as GF, despite being old, slow and not as strong as he was at his best. But hey, what does HE know? He's obviously just blinded by a haze of "nostalgia" :yep
Liston was a feared hwt. Just as feared as Foreman and Tyson. My feeling is George would win but would not argue the reverse opinion. Two very deadly, scary heavyweight champions.
belts means everything... the ibf champion is a crappy champion, the real champions are wbc and wba , spinks never was the best hw on the planet in any point of his career.(just like holmes was not the best hw between the years 84-86) i guarantee you that tucker would have beaten spinks during the time that he was "champion", i would hav e loved him against thommas, berbick, tubbs, or spoon.
no, he was not close to foreman in strength and hittind power, it is a myth and a ****ing joke at the same time , he proved that he could stop a fragile natural lhw and former mw. probably foreman would have killed patterson on the ring in 35 seconds. liston never proved his power against elite full sized hws. his best "big" rival was cleveland williams who was stopped before by nobodyes, willians never was a great thing. foreman was smarter than liston on the ring, that did cut the ring much better(liston was running around the ring against ali looking for a punch like a ******), foreman had clearly the better chin and he did show x4 more heart.
Does not matter who would have beaten who. The true champion is the true champion...period. Spinks beat Holmes and that gave him the title passed on down from Sullivan. He can only lose it in the ring unless he retires so the person who did beat him was Tyson who then became the champion. Your mentality is what has ruined boxing the last 35 years. There are many champions because the political bodies want it that way....the result is fighters who should never be called a champion are champion. This waters down the talent pool and makes the sport of boxing confusing to the lay fan. I've been following the sport intimately for decades and I can't tell you who the true champion is in most divisions. What does that look like to the average fan? This is one major reason why boxing is dying.
Yes I agree with this format. The linear title passed from Douglas to Holyfeild to Bowe then back to Holyfeild then to Moorer to Foreman to Briggs to Lewis to vacancy then to Vitalily. Only thing of course is this way around Shannon briggs gets to be a linear champ, Holyfeild only gets to be a two time champ and Lewis and Tyson become one time champs.
Lower level fighters have won the championship before. Briggs beat Foreman or at least he got the official decision so like it or not he then became the new champion.
Besides Patterson I dont believe he ever fought an elite fighter again until the Clay fight..All the rest of his opponents were powder puffs!!!!
It comes down to styles. George Foreman is a slugger, while Sonny Liston is a boxer puncher. Sluggers are usually toast against boxer punchers, because the boxer punchers exploit the openings they leave when they swing, and that quickly turns into a one sided fight. If you want to see this in action, then watch Joe Louis vs Max Baer, or George Foreman vs Ron Lyle. Watch how the styles match up and you will get it soon enough.
Patterson would be 50-50 to beat Haye, you colossal *****! Liston would wipe the floor with any of the robots. The heavyweight division is shite, today. Any decent champion like Holyfield, Holmes or Tyson would dominate now. You rave about Haye and Chisora ffs. One has no guts, the other has no dedication. If 100 people are polled on the greatest fighters in history, and the poll says 95% of people think the opposite to you, what makes you think that you are right?
