I remember seeing some pictures of Marvin as a middleweight in the mid 1970s and he was much thinner than he was later in the early to mid 1980s. He looks like a welterweight compared to a supermiddleweight when he was champion. Why do I mention this? Because his ability to absorb punches obviously was connected to how solid he was at the weight when he was champion 1980-1987.
No, he didn't. You're mistaking 'punch landed' for 'Hagler's hurt!' You probably think Antuofermo and Obelmejias hurt him as well, and that Mugabi and Hart nearly knocked him out.
As I said; Hagler was 'stunned'. He was not seriously 'hurt'; he was not in danger of being 'knocked out'.
Shook him?...yes...stopping him?...no. Hagler was always in great shape. He was nailed by Hearns...Mugabi...etc. Marvin had a terrific chin...
Agreed, Hearns had right until Hagler caught him with that `lucky` punch ... Of course Hearns would have Ko`d a fighter who never had even been floored in his career !
Wrong, Goody said that Hagler fought in the amatuers at roughly the same weight and he was always consistent with his weight. Plus, he ALWAYS had a great chin. It wasn`t like it improved with age...
Perhaps guys like Carter or Lausse could string a few lucky punches together and take Marvin out. Monzon probably has the best chance from the upper echelon middles. No one has a good chance though...
I saw the pictures. He was significantly bigger in 1984 than 1977. You can weigh the same weight and be physically more built in later years Talking about my favorite fighter, Hearns looked much more solid at 160 for Shuler than he did for Hagler a year before. Hagler sometime weighed in as low as 157, but still fought at 160 and was one of the most solid 160 pounders in history, which is why his chin was so strong.
I can tell you this. The Hagler of 1977 might not have taken Hearns punch as well. He was not as solid.
Wigfall hurt him the most when he smashed a bottle over his head, other than that nobody did anything more than momentarily stun him, and I'm talking beign stunned for a split second. I don't think Minter stunned him at all, Hearns hit Hagler with a counter after missing his own punch and was stunned for about half a second, Cyclone Hart a murderous puncher landed like 3 consecutive left hooks his best punch to no real effect and Mugabi landed quite a few big shots esp that uppercut, Hagler barely blinked. Nobody has ever come close to KOing Hagler and even against the likes of Jackson and McClellan I would bet my bottom dollar he could take anything they would dish out.
