Realistically what's left for Cotto to prove ????

I can't understand why a lot of people on this forum can't recognize that Cotto is a special fighter.

You forgot to list as notable wins; Gold medal winner Abdulaev at 140lbs and an unbeaten Carlos Quintana in his first fight at 147lbs.

Bob Arum did a superb job of bring up Cotto...nuturing his skills and tweaking his weaknesses to prepare him for his biggest fights. He had a very impressive streak of wins against quality opponents between 2005 - 2008.

 

I've always kinda felt like this, but since I like Cotto I was always willing to give him the benefit of the doubt instead of criticizing a possible great. Cotto is definitely a good fighter, you dont go through Paulie, Quintana, Judah without being good. BUT, he just isn't a great fighter when u get down to it. His only true big/great win was against Mosley...which in no way can be denied, so it must be applauded. However, I still don't think he was/is all that like some people on this message board think.

 

In todays game i think that is not so prominent the old saying to " beat a champion you have to go in there and take his title " is out the window now .

Fighting a genuine world class fighter in a title defence or as a champ in this day and age is the same thing !!!!!!!!

Cotto has fought everybody in sight from 140 - 147 in the last 4 years and here are you laptop potato's saying he's not a great figher !!!!!!!

When you think back to the old WW's and talk of them in greatness , in 10 years the same words will be mentioned about Cotto !!!!!!!

you'll have a hard time finding a current 147lb or 140lb fighter with a better resume than Miguel Cotto's.

Think about this, Cotto still would have been undefeated going into the Pac fight had Margarito not cheated.

He's not going to succeed at 147. He's never going to beat Pacquiao, and, in all honesty, I doubt he'll beat Mosley if they have a rematch. He might have a shot at Mayweather, but that fight will never come off. His only real option is to move up.

That said, a Margarito fight at 147 might help his legacy. If he wins, most people will probably forget about the first fight, especially with the plaster suspicions in mind.

In the long term, the only real place he can achieve anything is at 154.

 

But, nobody knows Margarito cheated in that fight. Nobody will ever know unless the man confesses it. We can all make assumptions but they're not facts. I lean towards thinking he probably did but since I picked him to win anyway, I can certainly see that he may not have for that fight also.

 

you doubt he'll beat mosley if they have a rematch? .. he's beatin mosley already if they never fight again cotto can say hey he never beat me but i beat him .. so what difference does a rematch make?

 

I think him and Shane have un finished business , but after the Pac fight if Shane beats Berto Cotto wil be off Mosley's radar for sure and id doubt he'd wanna walk straight into another all out war with Shane , i think 1 more showdown with Molsey before he retires could be realistic !!!!

But in the meantime Coto needs to re build but thats difficuilt after he's fought everybody in the division !!!!!!!!

 

Cotto has proven he is a world class fighter and one of the top fighters in the world today but he will never go down as an elite fighter, one of the all time greats like Pacquiao is.

 

I think the same as scott. Top fighter in this time period but hes a bit short of big name wins for the HOF etc. Almost simelar to hatton really (cotto has the stronger resume tho)

Paulie yep good win, Quintana good win v willaims not much else, Judah shot, Mosley excellent win. Clottey good win (tho many thought he lost) I just feel he neesa a win over a prime top notch fighter to really be HOF i really like cotto just think he needs 1 more. Its a fine line (often painful line) between being world class and elite
