I was around at my dad’s house yesterday. Who has followed Duran since 1972.

He was telling me this very early interview he saw of Roberto, when he was still boxing out of Panama, that appeared on a show he was watching.

Basically, according to my dad, he was talking about this guy who tried to mug him in Panama City that year, not knowing who he was, and what he did.

I’m paraphrasing, but according to my dad the translation basically came out as:

“I beat him to an inch of his life, and then when he was unconscious, I carved a “DURAN” tattoo into his arm, with the machete I was carrying, so he knew who to come to if he wanted his revenge. He never came”.

I think the best thing about it, is he walked about with a machete………but only used it to carve tattoos into people he had beaten up.

I'd guesstimate, in his last 60 years, he's probably had around 8'002 incidents like this

My dad, who's lived over there (where his interest came from) tells me central Americans, in general, tend to carry big blades with them.

It's probably true. If you read Ricardo Mayorgas Twitter feed, he's constantly talking about the big blade he carries with him.

Machetes and weedeaters are the lawn mowers of Latin America and thus commonly carried. Cutting grass with a machete also develops great left and right hooks

But yeah Duran was quite a street fighter who grew up in the tough town of Chorillo. His mom looked very Indian to me and his dad was "supposedly" a Mexican-American soldier stationed in Panama
