I would have warned Ali twice, then deducted a point if he persisted.
Why would I need an excuse? :huh

BTW , your posts on other subjects ,such as Napoles are sound, it's this hobby horse about Ali that lets you down big time.

    McVey,

I like the way you think,,,,,,,,,,,,Good Job

A 'good' Referee would have warned Mr. Ali after 6th-Hold 'illegal cuff' in Round 3,
    and said 'that is enough'.

This is where the 'Unclean Ali' not only held Joe Frazier, but pushed down on the
back of his neck, with an intenional foul.

'One more time, and you're losing a 'Point', that's enough'.

At the end of Round 3, a 'Good Referee' would have walked briskly over to Mr. Ali's
corner, and informed him that he was deducting a point from him, for that foul.

Entire thread is a load of crap. Many fights with huge punchers a boxer will box from distance and hold and spin away in close. Watch Dempsey Tunney. Ali clearly beat Joe in fight 2 and even Frazier himself admitted this in an interview.

I don't think it's just holding that is a problem with Ali's performance, it's the type of holding he employed.
He wasn't tying Frazier up like many fights would, ie. clinching Frazier's arms, he was using a blatant neck hold, something akin to wrestling move.
Frank Bruno did same thing to Tyson and was docked a point before the mid-way mark of the 1st round.

Anyway, it is what it is. The referee ignored the fouling and the rest is history.

Yeah, I don't blame Ali for this, it IS the referees responsibility. You find out where the line is and you fight as hard as you can. The referee's patter about punting him is ridiculous. How about enforcing the rules? It's a different fight right enough without the clinches. I don't have the figure to hand but I know Futch counted them and the # was horrific. Anyone else post the # in the thread?

Futch counted 133 instances of holding (I think).

    It was '147' holds,

Illegal cuffing behind the neck, and pushing down on Joe's neck,
were legitimate calls for point deductions.

The 'Filthy Ali' could have had a point deduction in every round from
the 3rd thru the 10th, where he was averaging '11' holds per round,
    totalling nealy 60-seconds of delay.

The man was 'pure filth' in the ring.

I just watched the fight again.
It was incessant holding from Ali. No need to count them, it was constant.

Both fighters looked washed-up to me. Not a great deal of refined skill or technique exhibited. Like a couple of cartoon alley cats scrapping.
It's untenable to hold this era of heavyweight up as somehow superior to the fighters of the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, in terms of skills and boxing technique anyway.

Quite an entertaining fight though, considering all the negatives. Ali did all that holding but he unleashed enough punches.

Some refs are more lenient with holding than others. The holding in the Bruno-McCall and second Benn-Galvano fight was probably more excessive than the second Ali-Frazier fight, and Perez didn't do anything on those occasions, either.Holding is holding, regardless of whether it's behind the back of the neck or simply tying the opponent up via his arms.

Why someone would feel compelled to take the time and effort in making up a false interview just to make their point is another matter.A simple "Ali should have been DQ'd" thread would have been sufficient enough.

    LENIENT -

Are you out of your mind, Tony Perez was 'INEPT'.

Imagine how he would have been 'respected' if he deducted a point from
the 'Unclean Muhammad Ali' or even 'Disqualified Him'.

Of course, the Ali Lovers would have crucified him, and would have called him a Racist
    Puerto Rican.

I just offered two other examples of him failing to deduct any points from fighters who used excessive clinching,so any ineptness on his part sure as hell wasn't limited to any biased officiating towards Ali.

Calm down and go take a nap,old timer.

Frank Bruno vs. Oliver McCall - and - Nigel Benn vs. Mauro Galvano

Those bouts were many years later,

    You're grasping at straws, from a 43 year-old Tony Perez in 1974.

    Easy there 'Squints',,,

Now go back to playing with yourself.......Love You - Wendy Peffercorn

If nothing else,Perez was consistent with being "inept".Such flaws clearly weren't limited to his officiating of saint Ali's fights.

And there's nothing wrong with grasping at straws, lad

Fortunately for us,Mr Pepe had pen and paper on hand in order to take note.
