I agree with Icemax. I don't have a problem with him fighting Walsh as a stay busy fight, so long as it wasn't for his title. As he said, Duran used to do it, another Lightweight champ Miguel Vasquez does it still and Pong did it a lot too. It's just hard to stomach as a 'title defence'.
You're spot on mate,as is Ice. I've already said earlier that it would be perfectly acceptable as a stay-busy fight with no strap on the line. Look through history and it was only really in the 90's that most of the champs completely stopped having non-title bouts.Despite what people think,Ricky isn't swimming in sheckles and I'd have no problem with him getting an earner. Again,we can't complain about haters having a gloat here but if anyone suggests that Ricky or Billy were totally happy with this,I'd have to disagree. Fishy could dig himself right out of a hole here if he got a deal signed for a fight against one of the top 4 before this fight takes place(obviously with the proviso of Ricky winning) He should be getting onto the Broner and Demarco camps right now.I still think Abril is the most gettable of the big names, but for the sake of Ricky's PR,there should be a provisional deal for a genuine big fight in place before the Walsh fight.
Non-title fights dont generate the same interest & the comissioning body concerned collects a smaller fee. I wish more champions stayed busy & fought regularly, guys like Toney & McCallum often had non-title 6-8 rounders inbetween defences. There is a chance that the Broner-Burns fight has already been pencilled in & Fwank doesnt want Burns fighting anyone too risky
:huh According to boxrec Burns will be his 4th fight in 21 months. He's been fairly inactive the last 2 years, has he had injuries or is Fwank just not keeping him busy?
Liam Walsh has a slight injury after the Appleby fight but was fit from January 2012 onwards, just wasnt given a date.
Although I agree with your point the year Duran beat Buchanan (72) he fought 6 times. 73 - 8 fights 74 - 8 fights 75 - 7 fights This will be Burns' 3rd fight of the year yet these days a champion who has that many fights in a year is regarded as active. As fighters fight less often nowadays they get more stick for fighting 'softer' opposition.
What's the chance the winner faces Broner??? I would say no chance. This Walsh fight is s poor one, not even the same weight
