What I'd call a fringe contender is someone that holds a world title, the ''champions'' are the ones that don't bother with them anymore (or ever).

A journeyman is one that loses as many ''proper'' fights as he wins - Prescott has fought about 8 good fighters and has split them dead even.

There are different levels of journeyman - Oliver McCall was basically a journeyman, Joshua Clottey fights like one. Some of the middleweight journeymen of the 1970's who couldn't get fights out of their home city would probably be ranked contenders these days.

Lots of what people call journeymen these days are just trialhorses, experienced guys or just crap fighters.

Might as well say it how it is. Nothing wrong with being called a journeyman.

a journeyman is someone who fights on short notice, anywhere any time, hence the name

 

On a split, 4 years ago when Abril was a 10 fight novice.....He did beat McCloskey, but then again so did a 38 year old fighter who was shot when he lost to Witter 6 years ago (and in a much more emphatic manner)

 

You are commentiong on something that I didn't say. The Johanneson fight was more significant and a better performance.

 

the thing is he is from columbia, he is never going to be able to sell a show in US so he would have to fight a top contender to sell tickets and no one half decent is going to go to columbia - i have no problem him having a confidence builder like that

 

It doesn't matter where hes from, a fringe world class fighter wouldn't take a match-up like that

 

well prescott had just been knocking out no names in columbia his whole career and abril atleast had a long amateur career, that cannot be a factor

 

well broner is a world champion and he was going to fight gary sykes and usually i would agree it doesn't matter where he's from, but you have to put it into context

 

The difference between a 6-9 fighter and Gary Sykes is night and day

 

have you ever considered that this is nothing more than confidence builder and a stay busy fight for bigger ones? if he fought another 6-9 guy in his next fight then fine! but he wont he will fight a top 10 light welter/LW. wake up and realise he has just been KO'd brutally and also had lost his fight before that in a hard battle - i see no problem whatsoever with him taking an easy fight in his home country and should have NO bearing on his position as a contender etc nor should it alter the level you perceive him to be at. That is the last i will say on this matter as i dont want to waste a night arguing with such an ignorant man as yourself :good
