I want there to be a no.1 in the division. At the moment there isn't. I've seen rees fight though and he is abysmal. There won't be many supporters of that fight except billy, yourself and the scottish contingent on here.
I rate Gavin Rees, I think that he's a great little fighter but not at that level....and especially given all the chat about unification fights.
I know there are, but to say one thing about unification fights and then deliver something completely different is very disappointing.
I'd prefer to see Liam Walsh fight Burns than Rees I think it would be a better fight,Ricky will dominate Rees with his height and reach imo. There's so many good competitive fights outhere for Ricky I just hope we get to see them,I have sneaky feeling after last weekends performance Hearn will be matching him very carefully.
It really all comes down to weather burns wants to fight the best and become the man at the weight or just make money defending his wbo title. If he wants status and praise and recognition then he should fight Abril or Vazquez, if the Rees fight happened first though it wouldn't be the end of the world, he'd be the odds on favourite but Rees is a decent fighter and seasoned pro.
I don't want it either. It's a backwards step for Ricky IMO. There are better 'confidence builders' out there.
I'm Scottish and I don't want that fight. What's to be gained fighting a guy who Broner absolutely destroyed unless Ricky does a more comprehensive job? And I'm not sure he does. I believe Ricky wants a unification, but as we all know,if others around him don't then it's not going to happen. He'll know better than anyone that he wasn't at his best on Saturday, but is the answer another "money" fight against the likes of Rees,or going after a genuine big name? I'm sure the "Scottish contingent" would much prefer a unification bout.
3 years Ricky has been a world championing think he's long over due a unification fight, please don't be foolish and judge Ricky on Saturdays performance he is so much better than that
He is better than that, Billy, as anyone who has followed his career would testify. I was at the fight and it was obvious to me that his 8 months out of the ring was a major factor in his performance. He won that fight by guts and courage and desire alone, which are the hallmarks of a champion. For the first few rounds he kept throwing single jabs that fell short and was getting tagged. Fighting a counter puncher like Gonzalez, and one with his kind or reach, I felt Ricky should have been denying him the space by doubling and trebling up with the jab while moving forward to keep Gonzalez backing up and off balance. But Ricky seemed stuck in the habit of standing in front of him throwing single jabs and then reaching with the right hand, leaving himself exposed. It was only in the eighth that he seemed to settle down and start boxing.
What was Ricky's own assessment of the fight Billy? Obviously delighted with the W but was he disappointed overall with his performance? Have you guys spoke about areas to work on etc or will that be done after the dust has settled and he's had a break?
Yes we've spoke about saturday and neither of us thought we actually got going until the 7th round. As I've said it didn't look in the gym as though the long time out the ring would effect Ricky but it did, lesson learnt for us both. however I've seen Ricky box counter punchers many times and IMO Ricky simple never got his feet working fast enough or cut the ring off enough, eh we all have not so good days its what we learn from it. Ricky will take stock I sure and return with a class performance in Sept!
Well said Billy, everyone has off days, to still come through and win a title fight on one of those bad days shows the hard work you guys are putting in. Was a very proud man in the crowd
