Rigondeaux and his potential for greatness

If Rigondeaux beats Abner Mares, Mikey Garcia, and. Nonito in a rematch, does he put himself in contention for ATG status with less than 20 fights? Or is there just not enough greatness out there for Rigo to carve out ATG status?

 

He has ruled out fighting at 126 for the time being. Yes, he could be ATG status easily.

 

Depends on how strictly you rate ATG, and how much you base it on other factors like how impressive they are in wins, skillsets etc, or just quality of opponents.

If he beat those 3 as you mention, then for me I would, but I rank Rigo ridiculously highly, have done for a while, so may be letting that affect my judgement

 

He's lucky in a sense there's so much quality around his weight. Frampton and Santa Cruz could go on to do great things and they're on his radar.

Up in featherweight you have Garcia, who's a ****ing beast, and Mares who's a top ten p4p fighter. Chris John would be a fine scalp too.

But to become an ATG, I think he'd need some more names and dominate another division. Uchiyama, Gamboa, Gary Russell Jr at 130.

 

I don't see him being an ATG. Needs to establish himself with more names, not just a couple.

To become an ATG, he needs to work harder than every other ATG. The sad thing is, he could have done well in the Pac-Morales-Barrera-Hamed era, they all had eachother to earn themselves the title of ATG (apart from Hamed who is legit HOF).

Rigo is 122, he needs to beat the elite of 130 if he's going down as ATG IMO.

- Get through those names and you are a legit ATG in terms of resume.

 

he puts himself into top 200 ATG status but not top 50. It isn't easy to get into ATG status.

 

If he went unbeaten through another few guys at 122 (such as Santa Cruz, Moreno, Frampton) and then beat those mentioned at 126: Mares, Garcia, maybe Donaire again, I'd probably rank him as an ATG. Just my opinion, don't think he would have to go too far up to the likes of 130 because he walks around just a few pounds above his fighting weight of 122 and always has done, and if he beat 6-7 of those guys mentioned that'd be a serious resume

If he were to have Donaire, Mares, Garcia then his top end would already be better than Marvin Hagler's who is routinely put inside the Top 35 -- predominantly for his sole division dominance. Why would Rigo need to go all the way up to 130 - and beat all the 'elites' there to be an ATG? atsch

 

I agree. But that's just the way ESB roles. No fighter today is better than the ATGs and all fighters today have to do more than the ATGs to become an ATG.

None of any of Rigo's victories or potential victories are fit to lace any of those guys' gloves.

he has a long way to go to be considered great. Most great fighters had to go through hell to get to that level if ATG. If it were easy all fighters would be ATG.

 

his window is closing because of age but if he fights at least three times a year for the next three yrs that's nine fights.... so he has to make each fight count by fighting the best possible willing opponent available each time

In fact put Lewis against all the oldies and outside of Ali.. he will be a favorite against them all. Stop with the 'oh modern fighters are underrated ****'

If that's true.. you will see threads about Lewis losing to Jack Johnson non stop.

Even in the classics.... where they LOVE Oldies. Lewis still wins majority of the time against the older guys in h2h debates.
