RING magazine ratings are crap

    According to Dan Daniel in a Ring Magazine article in 1958, Fleischer did the legwork for the ratings in the beginning back in the twenties, but Rickard had approval and signed his name to them. Later Fleischer took over the ratings himself with his staff. The Ring had correspondents in those days around the world and I think Fleischer leaned over backward to be fair to foreign fighters. He was a globe traveler and was proud of boxing's growing international popularity. He made mistakes, but I think his ratings probably give a pretty good picture of who were the top fighters in the 1920 to 1970 era. After Fleischer's death, I don't know, but the Ring ratings probably are better than those of the Alphabet organizations, being much less political.
