That fight was probably the first one when two all time great heavyweights were in the ring at the same time. Usually it was two great heavyweight NAMES,but one is rising while the other declines.e.g. Louis v Marciano.
Yeah, RIP Joe. Every night you gave it your all and I've never seen a boring fight from you(Many can argue the second Ali fight but it was OK imo and Ali made it an ugly fight by spoiling). True, probably the last aswell. The last involving two hvy greats was LL/Vit though Lewis won despite being the older guy.
--Considering the suspense of two undefeated champions meeting, the status of both, the proximity to prime of each, the clash of styles, the respective wills, Frazier-Ali I is easily the best one. And you know what? It was the most important of the three. And Frazier won it.
Was really shocking to me as I got the news a day late. A truly great artiste named Bhupen Hazarika had passed away a couple of days before and we were all preoccupied with that. He was a singer, lyricist, composer and poet who used his talent for humane issues and bringing about social change. I consider myself really privileged since he was from my hometown and also from the same neighborhood. We were all grieving and I missed the news of Smokin' Joe's passing. Just don't know what to say, what to think. One of the fighters who cemented my interest in boxing. Thrilling fighter, good man. Great. May the Almighty grant you an exalted place in heaven, champ. Ameen.
S, it is said good things come when you least expect it. And so with me when on March 8,1971,I came home from work and my friend was waiting for me with a ticket to the Ali/Frazier fight. I was shocked and surprised, but what i saw that night, leading up to that bout, and the fight itself, will be always a great experience for me. I try to be stoic, but Frazier's passing has left me sad, because he truly was one of the GOOD GUYS....Last time I felt this way,was when Joe Louis died...
Frazier's body is going back to the dust. Just like every other tent -they're for temporary use only. His spirit will never die, Burt. Everytime a man goes down and gets back up; anytime you see a man rise up against the odds with everything he's got, he's there.
Already paid my respects on Page 3, so I'm just being a busybody catching up on other posters' respects: Wow! Is that you in your avatar, avo? It will be my everlasting regret that I didn't go to see him when he visited Sydney last year.:? Your Mum was a fight fan? (God rest her soul) Some kids have all the luck! Great quote, Surf-Bat AND great avatar:happy!
I've been desperately trying to make the time myself, to re-watch all 3 of their fights, but no-go at the moment. Maybe Saturday, I hope.
