RIP Karl Mildenberger

R.I.P. Karl. Oh, the good ol' days. In the late 60's there were only a handful of HW's outside of the US that warranted respect; Karl was one of them. Some good victories, some bad losses.
Back then virtually everyone knew who the best 10-12 HW's were (or the 10-12 best at any weight!) and Karl was one of them.

The elimination tourney of 67-68 has been brought up.
You simply had to be there 'youngsters' (no disrespect at all).
We sat in study hall in HS analyzing the matchups.
August: Jimmy vs. Leotis; Ernie vs. Thad
October: Floyd vs. Jerry; Karl vs. Oscar.
We all missed Ali but 'the fight(s) must go on!

Martin did retire due to the eye injury. For26 years after that Martin lived a quiet life in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia. Early in 1995 he retired from Budd & Co. after 31 years as a machinist. In November that year Martin had a stroke brought on by hypertension and complications from diabetes, and died en route to a local hospital, aged 56.

Mildenberger's style caused Ali some discomfort in the early rounds of the bout. I never said he was winning or close to winning. If you watch the film Ali switched things up and became more of an attacker.

If Mildenberger, a solid guy, but smaller southpaw could give Ali some fits, you have to logically wonder how a better southpaw Ali's size or greater would do.

This was Ali in his prime. So know you know Mildenberger won a few rounds and hurt him. The question is will you ever learn?

Referee Teddy Waltham had Ali ahead 7-2-2, and Judges Felix Ohlet and Nat Fleischer (editor of The Ring magazine) each had Ali leading 7-3-1. The Associated Press had Ali in front 9-1-1.

The referee Teddy Waltham had his pocket picked and his fee for the fight stolen, on the plane back to the UK Ali learned of it and reimbursed him his entire fee.
Max Schmeling was ringside, he told the tv commentator,"Karl is getting a terrific beating".but of course you know best.lol

 

I read a interview they did with him a while back John. He's still as mad as ever ,but in a good way .I reckon he'll be here till he's 100 !

 

Mildenberger did outlive Ali and Ali’s quality of life was not good after he retired.

You alluded that Mildenberger should have gotten the decision over Folley. I'm not going to say yea or nay on this as I did not see the fight. But here is a report on this fight.

1964-04-17 : Zora Folley 204 lbs drew with Karl Mildenberger 191 lbs by PTS in round 10 of 10

• Location: Festhalle, Frankfurt, Hessen, Germany
• Referee: Otto Nispel

"Veteran Zora Folley gave young Karl Mildenberger a boxing lesson Friday night but the judges evened it up and called it a draw - a verdict that stunned most of the 12,000 fans that jammed the Messehalle here to watch the two highly ranked heavyweights in what was billed as an elimination match. Folley carved out cuts under Mildenberger's eyes and repeatedly scored with solid left jabs and straight right hands over the southpaw efforts of the German challenger. By the end of the 7th round Mildenberger had cuts under both eyes while Folley bled from the nose as a result of Mildenberger's left. Referee Otto Nispel took it upon himself to stop the fight time and again to warn Folley on butting and in the 8th round Nispel stopped the fight while he took Mildenberger to his corner and wiped the blood off his face so a doctor could come to the ringside and examine the cuts. Mildenberger, although clearly outclassed, never stopped trying and absorbed a tremendous amount of punishment from the American. He was still trying gamely in the 9th and 10th while Folley was content to coast and that was all the judges seemingly needed." -European Stars & Stripes

• The UPI reported that Folley, "appeared to have the upper hand against his 26 year old opponent." While the AP reported that Folley, "appeared to have piled up a good margin. He gave the German a battering in the 7th and 8th rounds."

Post fight comments

• "When the referee stopped the fight to examine the cuts, that gave Mildenberger time to recuperate." -Bill Swift, Folley's manager, claiming that Folley had hurt Mildenberger with a flurry of hard shots to the head just before the referee intervened.

• "I thought I won, but this isn't as bad as the decision I lost to Brian London in England. When you fight away from home you have to contend with this." -Zora Folley

 

I agree he's resistant in learning anything he views as inconvenient. McVey won't change.

 

That report was the one I originally formed my opinion on.But, having had a debate about it with Klompton who has seen the fight and states Mildenberger deserved the decision I deferred to him and changed my mind.
Rasta Gooly is as usual several years behind with his news but he is of the mistaken belief I still hold that original opinion,despite being corrected on it several times . That is because he is a total ****** with the brain of a squirrel.
