RIP Saoul Mamby

Former WBC 140lb world champion died this week at the age of 72.

Seems a bit surprising that he died at a comparatively young age when he he appeared so ageless in the ring.

At his best, a very tough, tricky boxer with good handspeed and great defensive awareness. One of my all time favorite boxers.

RIP Sweet Saoul. Go easy.

But, given that he had a fight at the age of 60, and remained articulate and in good health until the past year or so, it still comes a bit of a surprise. If any fighter seemed likely to live to an advanced age, Saoul would have seemed a good candidate.

 

RIP, Champ.

His last fight was a mere 11 years ago. And it was a TEN ROUNDER.

Btw always wanted to see his fight with duran, according to reports it was a pretty good fight and Mamby gave The Great Duran a good fight unfortunatelly it seems theres no footage of that fight.

 

Damn! Loved Mamby! Class guy, Slick boxer, had a great career. I think he fought at 62 yrs old. Very high ring intelligence . I loved watching him box

Aside from his skill level - which was awesome - one of the great jaws in boxing.

 

Aw man......old school all the way. It does seem surprising as Drew said that such a seemingly ageless fighter lived a slightly under normal lifespan. Seems wrong.

Go easy, Champ.

 

And he spent more than half of that long life competing in the ring.

 

I liked and respected him very much...both for his craftiness and fighting style, as well as for his advanced age "whilst" fighting. R.I.P. Champ!!

 

That dude did look like Mamby. That was my first thought when I saw Ghost.

 

He remained dangerous well past age 40 and even while way past his best beat decent guys like a still somewhat green Glenwood Brown, slightly past prime Gary Hinton and Reyes Cruz and fringe contender Larry Barnes.

Definitely old school.

Smartly matched by King as WBC champ and made big purses fighting obscure guys in their home country, as well as a good win over well known but faded Esteban Dejesus.

Like many King fighters, seemed to not come away from their relationship financially sound.
