Duran,in 1983,was producing his best form since the first Leonard fight,three years earlier. Ayala was largely untested,as he had n't beaten anyone of note. Duran would have taken 'Baby Bull' apart.
DURAN the GREAT would have SMASHED the **** out of Lou Duva's fatboy dreamboy clubfighter & only a single cell organism would think that this one dimension overated so called contender would stand any chance of lasting 6 rounds with the man who took on the Mighty Marvin Hagler for the full 15 & gave him fits. DURAN would crush Ayala mentally as well as beating him to a pulp, Ayala would weep with terror once up against the true "High priest of Violence":deal
I thought this, Ive only seen one Ayala fight (which he got beat in) but i read a few articles written at the time which raved about him. I think they tried to make the fight after Duran got beat of Laing (obviously thinking he was shot). Then he was one of the picks to fight Moore but got sent to jail.
I undertand that Ayala was very Disrespectful to Duran in a chance meeting around this time, Duran i think would certainly remember this, and i think Roberto would enJoy dishing out a iniially Slow acting but increasingly effective Poison, as indeed he administred to Davey Moore, The Words "Deep Water" and "No Mae West" keep coming to Mind, Duran Sinks Alaya with his Space Perception and Sublime Skills, And when Alaya starts to Huff and Puff....and he looks into those Cold Black eyes...Devoid of Mercy..Menevolent Bottomless pits, windows to the Soul...Or a far darker place ..from where true predatory instincts are unleashed. A very profound Lesson would be administered.
No logical way Duran would've taken Tony. Duran was too chubby at 154. He would've gone in there defiant and fearless for sure, shown some early defensive prowess, and then Tony would've shifted to destruct and destroy mode. He would've backed Duran into the ropes and bashed him to death, because Tony had the girth and power to do this. He would've made Duran look like the blown-up LW he really was. I see this going 4-5 rounds at most.
Duran would destroy Tony in about 8 rounds, too much experience.Though in a streetfight, I'm not sure.
Duran-Cuevas all over again. I think Tony would probably start off well with body shots just as Pipino did, then El Cholo would adjust. That was no flash knockdown Maldonado inflicted on El Torito. In that situation, Roberto would have ended it. Tony was never more than a prospect, and never went past ten rounds during his first career. If he couldn't take out Curtis Ramsey (who was starched by Mugabi the month prior to taking Ayala the limit), then how's he taking out somebody with the experience Duran had? 1983 was the year Roberto became the only challenger to take Hagler (then at his peak) the championship distance. The irresponsibly partying Panamanian of New Orleans would not reappear until Hearns in June 1984. 1983 saw his best since Montreal.
