Roldan was a classic frontrunner. No heart. The minute he got hurt against Hag and Tom, he wanted to quit. Tito had to beg him to continue. That's why Tito threw the towel at him and left the ring when he wouldn't get up vs Hag. Duran hurts him to the body and head in the 1st and Juan gives in by 5.
It is a tough fight to pick.. Duran might do well here since Roldan was in range of him, the only problem is Roldan was very strong and aggressive and this might go further than Duran would want as far as aggression and strength. But I would say Duran by late knockout a great fight.
Juan Domingo Roldan was a sparring partner for the great Carlos Monzon, he helped him prepare for the 1st title bout against Rodrigo Valdes in 1976. Roldan was credited for the bogus knockdown of then middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler in March 1984, but was stopped by Hagler. Juan was known as El Martillo, The Hammer. Roberto Hands Of Stone Duran gave Marvelous Marvin a good match in Nov 1983, losing on points to Hagler. Roldan packs a wallop, but he does not possess the boxing skills of the more seasoned Duran. Hands of Stone wears down Roldan with heavy artillery body shots, and counterpunching. Duran takes him out in round 7.
Were they sharing the same trainer Rich? Roldan was still 2 1/2 years off even turning pro so perhaps they were giving him some experience? I know that mad rooter Alex Ramos KO'd him in the ams.
The reason I mentioned the sparring sessions is because according to Roldan's auto biography, it indicates that he turned pro in 1975. And I read an interview that Carlos Monzon gave to a Ring magazine reporter, he stated that he sparred with Juan Roldan, and that Roldan appeared very strong. And on an interview with Amilcar Brusa back in 1992 on a Spanish channel, Brusa said that Roldan helped Monzon prepare for the first Rodrigo Valdes fight in 1976 by sparring with Carlos.
It would be interesting to get to the bottom of the timeline as something is askew somewhere. @Titan1 you have said over the years you had the Ramos amateur stoppage of Roldan. Do you know what year? Ramos hit his straps around 1977 at 147 and would have only been around 16 at that point.
At ages 44-45, Duran split a pair of decisions with Jorge Castro, another rough-and-tumble guy who was, in their first meeting, about 15 months removed from dropping the WBA middleweight title (and who had nearly a decade of fighting still left in him). I figure a younger, fresher Duran handles Roldan fairly easily based upon that.
Roland was so awkward....his appearance was quite horrifying for foes im quite sure...the crouch he fought in...the weird nimble skillfull spider like footwork all for the sole design of clubbing the other man to death like a caveman...the only thing missing was the wooly mammoth skinned clothing ...he was brutally strong...the years on the farm....but tailor made for duran....this would have been an incredible performance by Duran a masterclass of his defence, subtle skills and nous..a fight others would cite as proof of his ring nobility and skills.....I see lots of moments like the start of the 3rd round of the hagler fight when marvin charged him with a sharp patent left left right and Duran like lightning ducked and pivoted and walloped haulers body twice.....I think Duran knocks him out in 8
He got hurt very badly early on vs hearts but kept forcing a hard pace and than rocked hearts badly.roldan had incredible heart...he took on the very best rated ..hag,hearns,kitchen,nunn.....a front runner yep...no heart? Dont think so
You have no idea what yr talking about and are full of ****. It happened EXACTLY as I said. Watch the fights and the between rds and you here Tito both times pleading w him. Pay attention fool.
Sounds like your braincells blew a gasket when your opinion was met with dissent...my dear fellow of course it happened exactly ....sorry ...."EXACTLY" as you said .....because of course you said it so its gospel......every forum has the guy who acts like he's zlaton ibrahimovich..who starts a reply to a differing opinion with " You have no idea what you are talking about and are full of shhit" .....that i don't mind.....I have been known to be full of **** myself......but cmon bro its not really on to make unqualified statements about fighters having "no heart "...... ..Roldan only died a matter of weeks ago ....so just tone it down a bit or it comes across as mean....saying he has no heart when his bodies barely cold.... Roldan fought with a lot of heart its clear to me .You disagree .Thats fine too .Im guessing you've never stepped in a ring.thats cool too.neither did enzo calzaghe....you don't need to know how to cook to appreciate good food....but relying on a pleading corner man like tito abusing his fighter with a thrown towel in the face, leaving the ring as his mans counted out as proof a fighter quit.......my friend there's never been a boxer ever in history...who was as brave as a cornerman like tito... Otherwise keep up the good work. You're a value poster.i get a kick out of your posts.Variety is good. Regards The fool
They could have used Roldan in those caveman television commercials a few years back, but he was tough as nails.
