Are you ****ing around in this thread or what? As Stonehands said, the Montreal Duran would've been a damn good fight for just about any WW, Walker included. Style-wise, that Duran vs Walker is a hell of a fight. I would usually leans towards Walker, but thinking about Duran at his best, it's a damn tough call. Walker was the naturally bigger guy, even more bullish, but Duran was craftier. Very tough call.
That's not realistic, that's stupid. At WW, Walker had a much better career, and could possibly have beaten Duran, but to say Walker would run right through the Duran of the montreal fight pretty much says you think Walker runs through any WW that ever lived.
Duran would sure give one helluva account of himself. He was brilliant against guys that came to him and fought as few if any could outskill him. He also has plenty of power and strength at this weight. Good to see Walker getting his due, but this is also a fight Duran would be most excited about.
I'm not really considering this thing at 147. Walker really came into his own at 160 on up. He fought Jack Sharkey to a draw, and battled on even terms and even beat other heavyweights. Max Schmeling really did a number on him, but imagine what Schmeling would have done to an overstuffed Duran. I know, the match would have never been made, but at middleweight, Walker would have just brutalized Duran. Like I said, in less than 10 rounds, and maybe also at junior middle as well. 147 was Duran's teritory, but anything higher, Walker owns him.
Walker still beats Duran even AT 147. How will Duran deal with the Walker that beat the Jack Brittion in 1922?? Or the Walker that battle Lew Tendler?? Duran would be lucky if he beat Benny Leonard, at lightweight, or far just as good as Tendler imo. Benny was the only man to stop Tendler from being champ in the lightweights.
Theres no such thing as out of Duran's league , and if you mean in a h2h sense , the guy was only 1 weight class (naturally) above Duran , and Duran beat Leonard at that weight , who was one of the very finest 147 pounders ever. Plus , your not even taking into consideration the styles , this fight is at 147? Walker would come right at Duran , this means Duran would win , he was defensively superior on the inside , and had the punh to take out men bigger than him. Walker was an animal , but Duran was certanly rougher than him. At ww , Duran wins it
The thread just says "Roberto Duran vs. Mickey Walker". I didn't know it was just limited to 147. The higher the weight the more it favors Walker, whereas at 147 it favors Duran. I think the difference between Duran's performance vs. Hagler and an imaginary bout vs. Walker would be that Walker would be far less inhibited by feelings of "respect" like Hagler had when he fought Duran in '83. I think Walker would have fought Duran with a completely different mindset than did Hagler. I think that at middleweight, Walker's advantage in strength would be a factor that would offset Duran's strengths. Remember, Wlker did respectably well in defeat against that guy everyone is so in awe of, the legendary Harry Greb, and holding ex-heavyweight champ Sharkey to a draw is also quite impressive. Also, I don't think Tommy Hearns would have fared too well against Walker either, and he definitely wouldn't habe obliterated Walker like he did Duran.
Walker was a beast, whether at 147 lbs or at 160 lbs. The "Toy Bulldog" floored and beat fighters like decent and iron chinned HW Bearcat Wright (who also outweighed Walker by something like 50 lbs), Risko, Uzcudun, etc., he would simply wear Duran down...
Great summary. I go with Walker over 147. At 147 it's much closer. The bigger man has the edge though but it would be close. One thing... A guy who posts called Klompton is writing and researching a book on Greb and he knows his stuff. I've read him saying that the street fight between Greb and Walker porbably never happened. Shame if it didn't as it makes a great story.
How is it that simple? Prior to reading this thread, I would've chosen Walker, but Jesus people, it's not an outclassing at 147. Dempsey is overdoing it by a long shot. Duran would be lucky to beat Benny Leonard? I strongly disagree.
I agree here aswell pea , before this thread i would have said walker , but as you can see , i changed my opinion , really just because of how easy people are giving it to Walker , just wanting people to know how competitive it would be . I actually think Duran now though
