Thinking about it, I wouldn't even call it an upset. Weidman's claim to fame was catching Silva goofing off, and then winning the rematch by causing a freak accident to happen. Weidman looked a little suspect to me in his fight with the smaller Machida. I was expecting Weidman to crush him. I didn't think Machida was shot at that point. We've seen him finished off since then by other wrestlers. Weidman's kick boxing has always seemed slow as **** to me. I was waiting for somebody to punish him for doing something stupid like that. Weidman also seemed to start getting a bit ****y. Seems when guys get out of character they end up getting humbled. Not really an upset in my opinion. Weidman was just the mainstream name, since he beat Silva.
He's been able to get away with throwing those slow ass kicks against the smaller guys he was facing, who gave him too much respect.
Weidman isn't a very dynamic fighter. When his size and wrestling was neutralized, he didn't have much to offer.
Only thing I don't care for is elbows from the top that always causes way to many cuts .. Either way Rockhold sparring with Cromoer def helped .
I don't think that's a fair assessment. When Rockhold started stuffing Weidman's takedowns in the 2nd, he came out in the 3rd and pressured Rockhold with strikes particularly to the body. It was working as Rockhold looked tired and worn out until Weidman threw that stupid kick which turned the fight around.
It's such a huge advantage to be on top of somebody, they should outlaw all ground striking. Only allow BJJ/wrestling/submissions and give credit for taking someone down. If nothing is going on for 15-20 secs, ref should stand both guys up. This **** just ruins fights, this fight is a perfect example of it, so was Silva-Sonnen 2.
Agreed like impair it usually ends with cuts pride had banned striking from the top because of cuts UFC should do the same ..I think there is a higher risk of permanent injury IMO..
Pride fc didn't ban any grounds strikes, they just disallowed elbows. They allowed fighters to knee, soccer kick and stomp opponents in the head.
I'm not impressed by any fighter who slows so drastically after one ok paced round and they both tired. Weidman is good but that wheel kick was so stupid. Especially after he started executing what his corner asked - go to the body! He was breaking him in half. He's regretting that mistake right now. It makes you wonder how you rank Weidmans win over an ageing Silva. I think what told the tale is that after a shaky start, Rockhold matched Weidmans grappling and then matched his striking. As a result, he was taking away Weidmans options.
