I'm just not understanding the point of the thread. If it's to say that Rocky didn't come forward in crouch and leaning position, then all the film I've seen of him must be of somebody else. If it's to say that Rocky had good defense and wasn't just a "come forward fighter i.e. punching bag", then the truth is someplace in the middle. Sure, he had better defensive subtleties than some fight initially see when watching him fight, but that doesn't change the fact that his defense overall was porous.
See, now that's just a major mischaracterization of this thread. You're simply describing a wholesome crouching stance. I'm refuting actual descriptions of him as a defensively negligent berserker who literally lead with his face. And I'm addressing how some negative descriptions of him have been grossly exaggerated, such as his tendency to "eat jabs willingly," having shaky balance, and swinging wide and wildly. I've even heard people say he didn't move his head a lot.
Would you say Rocky had more defensive skill then he is given credit, he developed a defense that best suited his body type and abilities?
He was busted up in his winning performances against old shop worn bald skinnies who actually fought him on even terms until due to their age and 52154 fights on their clock their legs gave out.....what a surprise. Was Tyson marked up when he faced Holmes or when Clay stopped the aging Liston, lol, not a mark . The fact is that Marciano had poor defense and got away with it due to his subpar opposition. Marciano's defensive flaws would be brutally exposed by modern PRIME TRUE Heavyweights starting with Liston.....for instance, he would be upper cutted to death by Foreman, Tyson or Bowe, he is literally begging for it.
Ok, I cannot take issue with that at all. In fact the counter argument that he went 49-0 because he faced weak opposition and was a hulking 188lbs sounds a little silly. He was the Heavyweight Champion fighting guys his size and bigger, he obviously was somewhat on the ball.
Basic scrutiny shows rockys defense was poor at worst, above average at best, and every once in a while "good" for a man with his size and style. Can we at least agree on that?
What do you mean average defence? Was he elusive? No. Was he hard to hit? Yes. So by what definition do you guage defence if you don't include not Being hit a lot? His defence consisted of leaning further over to one side or bending at the waist. It just isn't as simple to say Rocky had a poor defence. It's like saying one car is less safe than the other based on one having an airbag. It depends who is driving the car dosnt it? Rocky limited what was coming back at him. His opponent was either getting hit or watching out for what was coming at him. Rocky (probably unintentionally) limited the openings he created with his own mistakes. If Rocky missed he usually made sure he was too close to be hit back. It was hard to make him pay for a mistake. The films I see of Rocky show that he always wound up getting hit less than the guy he was fighting.
This literally never happened. The only fighter that could have beat Marciano had he been prime was Louis. I don't think I have ever seen someone as dedicated to conjuring up such an elaborate fantasy as you.
