Here is another: Greb Splits Dempsey's Tongue In Final Workout For Billy Miske Washington post Sept 3, 1920 Benton Harbor, Mich., Sept. 2- With but one more day of hard work remaining in their training grind, Jack Dempsey and Billy Miske cast aside all restraint today and gave their sparring partners vicous maulings for six rounds. Speed was the watchword in both camps and after the workout Dempsey and the challenger declared they boxed at the top of their form. Dempsey sparred three sessions with Harry Greb, Pittsburgh lightweight, and another trio with Marty Farrell, Pacific Coast middleweight. Miske felt the lack of capable sparring mates and he was compelled to set the pace himself. He stepped the first two rounds with George Wilson, a negro heavyweight, the second two with Jack Heinen. Early in the third round Greb's head collided with Dempsey's mouth, cutting the champion's tongue so severly that he spat blood for the remainder of the round.
It is only fair to say that he was a teenager with seven recorded fights and only weighed 142 lbs when that took place.
Bill Brennan? Well I never really thought of his as a puncher and might have to side with Old Fogster there. anyway What about Sam McVea, Harry Wills, Luis Angel Firpo, Jess Willard, Jack Dempsey. Did he fight any of those real punchers? how do you think greb does against them janitor?(besides dempsey)
OK. If Greb was fighting Firpo tomorrow then I would pick Greb. I might be making myself a hostage to fortune but I dont think Greb would have any trouble outpointing him and Firpo would need to land the big one to win. McVea, same again. This is going to be a badly depleted McVea with slowed reflexes so the chances of him catching Greb cold are fairly low. This is Grebs fight to loose at this stage. With Wills we are going into unknown teritory a little. We are pitting Greb against not only a much bigger man but one who is technicaly proficient. I also nte that Wills did better against some of the small elusive fighters who gave Dempsey problems like Willie Meehan. Think I have to go for Wills here. With Willard again we are going into unknown teritory a little because he is so much bigger than anybody Greb ever tangled with. He is not verry technicaly proficient however and I can see Greb outpointing him depending on the duration of the fight. Another name you might have added is Fred Fulton. He probably had the technical tools to give Greb hell and Greb would not have had the power to exploit his main weakness (his chin).
