Holy ****, bad stoppage. Bad end to Mayorga's career, if that.

It was a legitimate knockdown, but he wasn't hurt and certainly not enough to need a life preserver thrown overboard from the ref.

Gómez won some regional trinket, and is hoisting it overhead in one still-taped (ungloved) hand while parading around the ring.

On the other hand, kind of a fitting microcosm thereof.

Mayorga showed big time power, and was at times super crude and capable of flashing some underrated boxing skill - and then makes a rookie blunder, gets dropped, and is "knocked out" in bizarre, almost comical fashion.

Mayorga has a t-shirt on in the middle of the ring, mopping his face with a towel, and is giving a slurred interview. Retirement? I speak a decent amount of Spanish but can't understand the mile-a-minute conversational dialects of native speakers. (as opposed to when the commentators speak and make a point to enunciate themselves and draw syllables out, much easier to comprehend)

    Apparently might be a rematch.

Mayorga was 7lb overweight, by the way. Half a pound more and he would've been over the light heavyweight limit and technically a cruiser.

It was, however, scheduled at super middle...which Gómez made on the nose.

    Sad end to his career.

When he came onto the world scene he was hungry but ironically it was his winning of his title that imo led to his downfall.

Poor guy, from a poor country makes a million then the fire dims.....hope he's made enough money to finally retire for good.

Anyone remember when Mayorga's name was in those shady ass criminal papers that surfaced, showing all sorts of possible criminal links and what not?

I'm shocked he never went the way of Khurtsidze, frankly.

I'd favor him to beat Cobrita in a rematch but honestly I would rather Mayorga just retire once and for all.
