Who would win this match up at 175? Good clash of styles. Charles was at his best at LightHeavyweight. Jones still had alot of talent at 175 as well.
I pick Jones to win this one. I think Roy could break up Ezzard's boxing and ryhym without compromising his own one bit. I think he could bank enough rounds. It's possible Charles could KO him, ofcourse. I do wish we'd learned more about that Jones chin during his peak. My pick - Jones WPTS.
The thing here is, Charles' hands are so fast, he can hit Roy with combos definitely. i dont mean that that spells a KO loss for Jones, but it could. Anyhow, Jones could possibly do his usual thing and be elusive for Ezzard and possibly take it that way. But for me, Charles will be slick aswell, and maneuvre Jones into trade-offs throughout, at some poiint, it will pay off. Just my opinion.
I go with Charles he could do it all and proved himself against the best so we know he could handle elite opponents the same cannot be said about Roy at 175lbs. I think Charles would stop him late, in his fight with Marshall which is at light heavy he looks excellent and you can clearly see his speed and power are a lot better there then in his heavy days.
I havent seen enough of Charles but from what Ive heard, he should be too much for Roy at LHWT but thats not my official pick, I refuse to pick until I see more of charlie.
I can't see Roy going 15 rounds with a fighter so complete and virtually flawless as prime Charles. His speed, precision, and overall superb technique would allow him to hit Roy flush, and by the middle rounds, I think he would be hitting him often, despite how fast RJJ was. Jones' chin was never truly tested in his prime, and since he has twice been flattened in quite brutal fashion by two fighters who never hit as hard as peak Charles. Charles stops him, either man could be ahead on points when the end comes, but the end comes no matter what. While he probably wouldn't chose to do so often, I think Charles is one of the few who could get the better of Jones on the outside. I just can't see Roy, who had unreal talent and was very intelligent in the ring but who had obvious flaws, beating a man like Charles who at his best was as close to flawless as anyone else. He's just too much.
I go with Charles he proved himself against the best of the best while Jones never fought guys like Moore.
A hard one to call. How big is the ring? The bigger the better for Jones. How many rounds? The more the better for Chalres. Would Jones even risk this fight if he and Charles were both in their primes? I would pick Jones would win this fight, much the same way Leonard beat Hagler. Charles might do more damage, but Jones would score more often, and fights a smarter, but safer fight. Neither guy had the best chin, and both hit hard enough to take each other out.
Ezzard Charles was beating fierce ones like Archie Moore, Jimmy Bivins, Lloyd Marshall, Elmer Ray (who outweighed him by 20 pounds), and the clever Joey Maxim. In serious contrast with most of Jones' career, Ezzard was fighting former champions and formidable opposition early and never stopped let up fighting everyone from Burley at MW to Marciano at HW. Ezzard has too much experience, skill, and a willingness to take risks for Jones. Jones, with that speed and power, combined with the unorthodox Burley-esque style would make it interesting... but the big hint for me is how easily Ezzard dealt with Burley. That's the convincer. Ezzard wins as a MW or as a LHW. That post-war and Pre-Baroudi Cobra was a fighting machine. Here's a summary of why he beats Jones: * Ezzard could cope with bangers -as Elmer Ray and Lloyd Marshall and Archie Moore proved beyond doubt. * Ezzard can cope with unorthodox boxers known for speed and power. Burley was smaller than Jones but I'm not quite convinced that he hit any less hard at his best and I'm thoroughly convinced that Burley was better than Jones in terms of experience, quality of opposition, and heart. * Ezzard was known for speed, rythym, timing, and hard punching. He may not match the devestation of Jones in this regard, but he has superiority in every other category the honest analyst would care about. * Ezzard's level of skill far exceeded Jones. I have to consider the guys Charles fought. Roy never faced as many talented fighters of that caliber in his career. I mean Johnson and Tarver KO'D Roy! what would one of, if not the top Lightheavy of all-time do? this is a guy who beat Archie Moore 3 times once by KO. He also beat Charley Burely and he supposed to lose to Jones. Boyhood heroes die hard and Jones' career coincided with many a posters boxing upbringing but its a visual mirage. The substance that was Charles has to win this.
