This is the problem with making the fight, it's why Hatton and Khan tried to build a PPV base in the US. Benn-Jones Jr would of sold because of McClellan and Barklay fights build a base. Don King screwed everyone out of that fight and lost the WBC belt to Malinga. If he bothered to watch the first Malinga fight, where the British commentator admitted Benn didn't deserve the verdict, he would of made the Jones Jr fight.
The fact he got in with Calzaghe (Collins cowarded out when seeing his highlight reel one-shot knockouts) and 215lb Carl Thompson suggests Eubank was more than willing to go for glory once the money had been banked. He said when announcing his comeback in Aug 96 that he was seeking respect and wanted both Toney and Jones if they'd come to the Middle East or accommodate him Stateside. He was 'over' the Collins 'episode'.
Malinga clearly beat Benn in the first fight. Don wanted to sell Benn-Jones as a 'revenge mission', as scummy as he is. That would've sold! Huge! It went beyond boxing, this was a guys life. King and morals or decency don't go together.
Why, he didn't do it and always stated he didn't like the sport. Why would someone who didn't like the sport make their job harder than it needed to be
To be fair, Benn wouldn't of landed a glove on Roy post-McClellan. It would've been embarassing. His balance was completely gone, due to a shadow on the brain (xray after Gerald fight). Watch him literally fall over himself against Nardiello and Collins etc, when trying to throw a punch... Malinga was actually his best performance post-McClellan.
He loved boxing, he was just doing too much of it. He wanted respect, more than the money. His words in Aug 96 comeback speech.
After he lost his belt and his negotiating position though. Also I think he thought Thompson was a weak belt holder. From what I remember he could of forced a Darius fight if he wanted because of his standing in the WBO but choose Thompson instead
And rightly so, he'd of gained far more respect fighting a cruiser than beating an unknown overseas, and duly did.
Correct. mandatory #1 contender for Dariusz. but Eubank must have seen something with that match he did not like & went after Thompson instead.
Sorry you've lost me? Eubank wanted that respect. A loss to Toney would've given him it. His 'perfect' career plan was stated in his book and even headed chapters - 1 Learn the Craft, 2 Apply the Philosophy, 3 Acquire the Financial Security, 4 Achieve the Fame, 5 Earn the Respect.
He wanted respect at this point, he'd had all his glory already. Fighting a cruiserweight who dwarfed him was going to get him respect. Fighting just another fighter for a title in Germany in just another fight wasn't, it would've been same old.
