Yeah, Eubank predicted Toney would beat Barkley when nobody else seemed to, saying Toney would beat him on craft and that Gary Mason, Nigel Benn, Bruno, Lewis, Watt etc didn't know boxing like he did! Also Arum failed to sign Nunn to a new deal, because King offered more.
Chris never forgave the 'pure ignorance' of Bob Arum and US TV for snubbing his fight with Nigel Benn in 1990, believing Eubank was simply cannon fodder for Benn. He vowed never to sign for Arum or US TV, and never did. It would've made him an instant hit Stateside.
A man of great principle, similarly Frank Maloney though seeing big money in a Benn-Logan II fight couldn't resist slipping in Logan-Eubank on a Benn undercard to 'bump Eubank off'. He promised Chris £100 on top if the fight was shown on ITV, Benn went short and they showed Logan-Eubank yet Maloney never paid up! When Maloney offered Eubank a three fight deal in Sept 96 to face Crawford Ashley, Montell Griffin and Virgil Hill, when Eubank was pretty much frozen out of the UK scene with no TV and no promoter, Eubank responded: 'Regardless of whether I believe I would beat those fighters, I would rather spoon my eyes out. You still owe me that £100!'
Okay. That’s fair enough. But I have seen interviews where he said he didn’t pursue them. So he wasn’t robbed of the fights.
His fight with Calzaghe drew huge interest more than any of Nunn`s fights, Calzaghe was more famous than Tate was.
Eubank was smart. Benn thought he was getting the bigger share of the purse in their rematch, what he didn't realise was that Eubank's £850K was NET and Benn's £1M was gross! Benn and his team of London gangsters didn't understand what those terms meant when they signed the contract obviously! I think that inspired Benn to move to LA. Also, both the winner and loser of Eubank-Benn II would be tied to Don King for three fights each. After it was scored a draw, Eubank was free to do as he pleased because a draw wasn't put into the contract! Got King and Warren's back up big time, they won the purse bid for Eubank-Close II and paid Eubank £1.25M NET (fantasy money on free TV in a small hall, although Kings Hall Belfast was epic), believing Close would win if they upset the champ doing things like giving him a box room to change and warm-up in, putting fans on full blast that were out of reach by the ceiling so he came in dry, trying to provoke him at the glove tape inspection and paying a leprechaun to throw tonnes of hardened glitter all over him in the ring!! They also dined the judges at the most expensive restaurants and put them in the most expensive hotels. Eubank still won and the SKY deal was ON! King and Warren were having kittens, it was hilarious.
Jones was a better counter puncher and would have toyed with Barkley and beaten Starling more convincingly than Nunn did, however Malinga`s high guard made Roy look bad so Starling could have done the same thing without landing as much as he did v Nunn also Nunn was hit far more by Toney than Roy was.
Eubank was a pundit in the studio for the Jackson v Graham bout and point blank said he would not fight Jackson when asked if he would by the host after Jackson knocked Graham out, he also admitted on super middles around the table on sky in front of Calzaghe, Collins and Jones that he didn`t want to fight Jones while he was champ.
Nunn was missing more v Toney than Roy did ansd was getting caught more, there was nothing in a ring Nunn could do that Roy couldn`t and Roy`s lead right was far better than Nunn`s straight left.
