who cares if he nearly beat Bowe WHO the **** else does he have on his resume?. Roy wins this fight convincingly. If seen about 5 Tubbs fights. Obviously i'm going to look at Boxrec to refresh my memory dumbass. Boxing forums are horrible you don't know if someone is telling the truth, if someone is joking, if someone is just trying to skew the results, if someone just hates one of the boxers and votes for the other boxer to win all the time. Ok maybe it was a little harsh. Tony Tubbs like I said in my other post, was a championship caliber heavyweight. Fast hands, punched in combination, used a good sticking jab and footwork and for the most part had a good chin. He had some better wins then you give him credit for and in my opinion with those type of skills, he would have a way better chance of landing cleanly on Jones, who was never even in the stratosphere of being a "true" heavyweight. The one shot Ruiz landed on JOnes seemed to shake him for a second, so its not out of the realm reality that a guy like Tubbs who probably had a little better power than Ruiz would be able to connect a little more. Who knows, Jones would be a live dog, but if I was betting on this matchup I would probably take Tubbs. For the record Im from the good ole USA.
I'd pick Tubbs in this one. Bigger and maybe even faster. Threw punches in bunches behind a good fast jab. Jones had one fight at HW and it was against a hand picked opponent. Ruiz was made to order for Jones. Still it was good win for Jones but Tubbs was alot faster than Ruiz and threw alot more punches. Jones wouldn't be able to pot shot a stationary target and avoid the one or two return shots ala Ruiz. It's no coincidence that Jones didn't stay in the HW division after beating Ruiz. He got the title he knew he would win and said goodbye. Tubbs by decision.
In 1989, an aging Tony Tubbs outgunned and outpointed the much smaller, quicker, and slicker Orlin Norris. Even though Norris was nowhere near the talent level of a Roy Jones, he certainly had very similar traits and was fighting under a lot of the same circumstances. The main difference, is that in 1985, Tubbs was at his very best, and if this was indeed the version of Tony that Roy would be fighting, it may prove to be a problem. I'm thinking Tubbs takes a close decision, not because he was better than Roy, but because he at least had enough speed and skill to compliment the significant reach and size advantage that he'd have in this match-up. While Jones is definitely the faster, more athletic and talented of the two, the margin would not be as wide as it would need to be, the way that it was in the Ruiz fight.
I said MAYBE even faster. Not DEFINITELY faster. Considerng that Tubbs was alot bigger than Jones his speed was certainly near that of Jones. Roy wouldn't be light years ahead of him in that department like he was against Ruiz. I think Mr. Magoo put it in good perspective in his post regarding this issue so please don't call me stupid. It hurts my feelings.
There were a lot of heavies from the early 80's who may have given Roy some competition just from speed alone.
Tubbs, with the exception of Greg Page, had the best natural boxing ability of the 80's crowd, and his speed would've made Roy question moving up to heavyweight in the first place.Tony by a shutout decison over 15, at worst losing only two rounds to Roy Jones.

here's the weekly put jones vs any heavyweight thread and he couldn't win. seriously, i bet you could put a jones vs mitch blood green thread up and the "experts" on here like the great a, ezzard, and burt would probably pick green. tubbs' size obviously could trouble jones. (that's why there's weight classes) imo, tubbs had a decent jab that would be his best weapon in this fight. i'm not sure tubbs would be active enough to win enough rounds. jones potshots his way to a ud here.
No chance whatsoever for a shutout. Tubbs being a very fast handed heavy would be the key here. His average power would have to be extremely respected by the much much smaller Jones. I still like Tubbs in this.
