I agree about not holding recent losses against him, but the problem with putting rjj atg top 10 is that Ali already had many top notch wins whereas roy only got a couple. rjj is still the man, but he should quit fighting. It's not soo much that his skills/reflexes have eroded (they have), its that he doesn't seem to have the confidence to open up against quality fighters including tarver, calazaghe, hopkins. Yes he may not be quick enough to do it easily against good fighters anymore, but he barely tries. against b/c level guys he can still look pretty good
Prime Roy tops all between 160-175. You could make a case for a prime Roy vs the older heavyweights who were only as big as today's cruisers. He's the best fighter I've ever seen and that includes leanord, hagler, hearns, duran, Floyd, Ali, holmes. And he easily dominates his contemperaries prime for prime.
where in RI are you from tony? i was born and raised in westerly anyways...to the idiot that said "mayweather will be next"...maybe you should realize that, like some posters pointed out, roy never learned to master his craft...the fundamentals..and how to be a smart and cagey fighter....thats why when his reflexes went...it didnt work...floyd is the complete opposite
I'm not a big Floyd fan but I don't want to see any fighter follow Roys steps. I want to see more fighters retire with their health intact
no he stuck around too long, and if Floyd sticks around too long he will lose too, boxing is a young man's sport weather people like it or not.
What happened to RJ's is he got Ko'd by Tarver and after that his confidence completely left him. He fell prey to fear. Just goes to show his massive ego was made on a foundation of sand. The truth is RJ could not come back from a real loss, he could not do what great fighters are supposed to do and thats come back from adversity and defeat. Goes to show you that his fascade of greatness and self confidence were nothing but a grand illusion. He was so afaraid of losing he took alot of safe fights and when he finally lost he could not deal with it. If he was truly the great fighter everyone says he was why could he not overcome the adversity of losing. It ionly took one ko/loss for him and his career to fall apart. That was the question that everyone wanted to know the answer to, that is how would RJ respond to adversity and would his response be one of a great fighter who deals with it and overcomes it or will he fall apart? The answer was he would fall apart. If he could of comeback and defeated Johnson and Tarver he would be one of the greatest. I don't think age hit him until much later so I don't think you can blame age for his career nose dive. When he fought Calzaghe is when I think his age started to become a real factor.
Tarver KO punch effected him forever the blatant proof for this was Tarver vs Jones III, when Jones managed to hurt Tarver with body shot and uppercut he's backing up while Tarver was clearly hurt and cornered. There;s nothing more to say, his confidence to throwing punches while dancing around is gone. sadly, I think Jones will have one more which would be a farewell fight against weak opponent
What a stupid post, the man was P4P #1 for 10 yrs, just because he couldn't fight anymore after he got old is no reason to say he wasn't great.
His last couple of fights will be over shadowed by his brilliance same as Tyson ..Is anyone getting on Tyson for the Williams and McBride fights ? No because we all know a prime Tyson is a diffrent fighter same as Roy !
