*Sighs* I wasn't saying roy had a karate stance or not, however, the reference was for a few things i) Roy's all round quickness ii) Fluidity of movement iii) Hands generally held low iv) Relaxness v) Very light on feet vi) Somewhat unorthodox, unconventional foot position with a slightly wider then normal base and not a some more traditional foot movement for a boxer ala Joe Louis. Really, i think a lot of people read the title of the thread and went off on a tangent, because again this was merely observational. And to those who dont watch boxing tapes :huh You do know this is a boxing forum, right? Sage
My uncle does Kung Fu and I wouldnt challenge him to a fight... In a boxing ring with boxing gloves and rules.. yes I would, but there's no way i'd fight him in real life.
LOL most ufc fighters are blackbelt in legit martial arts, and lol and any high level wrestling or jiu jitsu or boxing guy will kill a "high level wushu guy.
I don't know. High level wushu guys have those big wobbly swords, and those spears with the chains on them.
Is that a fact?? I never seen Bruce Lee or Jackie fight in a boxing ring against a champion. Maybe in a street fight but **** a boxing ring is for BOXERS ONLY.
Seriously though, every Kung Fu fighter who's stepped up against a real fighter has been destroyed. Karate and Kung Fu etc are great ways to keep fit, but theyre not the deadly martial arts they were thought to be in the era preceding the popularization of MMA. Watch any of the early 'style vs style' matchups in the old NHB tournaments; the traditional martial artists invariably get emabarrassed.
Don't worry about the assholes that went on a tanget, its actually a interesting observation to me especially because I showed some of my friends that knew nothing about boxing and loved all the old style karate movies a Roy Jones highlight.... After they were done they thought Roy Jones was some kind of ninja.... :rofl
Inside a ring or an octagon. But I don't think its necessarily the same way if both combatants are in a no holds barred street fight. Don't get me wrong I think MMA is superior to any other style out there because of the incorporation of many of the different martial art styles into a single fighting style. But it does not necessarily mean it dominates all the other styles like there's no tomorrow. DEPENDING on the opponent, a fighter of a certain style can beat another fighter of a certain style(whether it be MMA, Kung Fu, Boxing, Wushu, TKD, etc). While MMA(or Jeet Kune Do) are at the top of the totem pole, it doesn't suddenly mean that all the other Martial Arts Styles are useless or unuseable. No offense, but I think its disrespectful to those styles who basically laid the foundations in the creation of MMA.
I was about to post basically the same thing but decided to read through all the pages in case if it was posted before. I didn't really expect it and I'm positively surprised that someone did. Here's how I see it: To me fighting is a natural ability that lies in everyone of us. You need to be in a certain kind of mental state to wake it up. Some people happen to live in circumstances that are favourable for it to happen and sometimes it happens. Man needs a real, good, personal reason to let this ability come out. For example being bullied at school may wake your pride and the kind of attitude you need to be a good fighter - 'I'll never let them do this to me again no matter what. Otherwise I'll loose all the respect to myself. It feels like it's worse than death so I don't care and if they'll try again I'll give my best to beat them. I know I'm right, I'm fighting in the name of justice and it gives me courage and a peace of mind that I need'. Martial arts in general with their '1..,2..,3..' pictures that show how exactly every single moove should be done are made to help this natural ability to come out. And when it does you don't need to stick blindly to the turtle like guard etc. During the fight you're fearless, open minded, relaxed and just do what it takes to win- you know what to do. You have the genuine feeling of the space around you, you're a bit like out of your body and you're using it like a tool to beat the opponent. Ali, RJJ, Naseem Hamed to me are all examples in boxing. I never payed much attention to Bruce Lee fighting but I can easily believe in his similarity to RJJ. And many others. A lot of ignorant posts in this thread BTW..:verysad
