I think this is a really interesting bone of contrition.

On the one hand, Cotto adopted a plan that all but guaranteed his defeat but would maximise his chances of finishing - that's questionable, at best.

On the other hand, nobody understands better the ebb and flow of fights better than fighters. He obviously agreed with you that standing toe-to-toe would result in his KO, and that he was better of trying to keep out of danger...the problem is, standing toe-to-toe is his best chacne of victory at this point.

There's really no right or wrong if you haven't felt those punches, though as fans we're always going to want our men to fight for victory. Myself, I'm leaning toward giving Cotto a pass now we're a few months down the line.

It depends who is making the classification and how popular the fighter is. There's no universal criteria here. For instance, if you're a fan of someone like Margarito, anyone who boxes and moves is a "runner", because you need to defend the fact that your hero the definitive plodder of his generation.

Sometimes, you even see people who don't mind someone like Dirrell, but then they call him a "runner" because they prefer Carl Froch. People are often inconsistent in their classification.

I figure someone is running if they are clearly avoiding action and not landing on their opponent. Someone who is outlanding his opponent while controlling the pace of the fight is a true ring general.

It's running and potshotting when a fighter I don't like does it.

Ring generalship and distance control if I like the fighter.

    Going in hard on Cotto.

Seems Cotto's latest fights he has been on his bicycle. Problem is that he trains to plant and kill the body. So he always runs out of gas on his bicycle.

And Clottey proceeded to do nothing to take a fight he would've won had he just DONE something.

Good point, people naturally have style preferences and this will subjectify the process.
