would a weighted vest be a better? i wouldnt buy one myself theyre mad expensive but I would think they would be better than ankle weights, where you are putting the weight on the end of your feet which isnt natural and probably worse on your joints. Putting the weight on your torso would be more like running as a heavier person
Ankle weights aren't a great idea, it's just asking for an ankle injury. I'd say running hills would be better for strengthening your legs and challenging your conditioning.
Ive used ankle weights when skipping and running. Especially when I use to be a full on basketball player. Massive difference with my vertical jump and being light on my feet. Everyones body is different and at different developing stages. Get advice from a professional physician or your doctor. I have use them over 10 years and my knees and ankles are fine. If ankles weights are that bad, somebody better tell Floyd Mayweather because he uses them all the time in skipping and it doesn't look like its affected him...
It's one of the dumbest things you can do in training. Running with weights in your hands is also stupid. Running with added weight in general is stupid. Just don't.
Ok. So everybody that has said it's not good and has explained why is wrong because Mayweather does it... Nice argument
Everybody that said its not good either hasn't really used them properly or don't fully understand how to execute correct form when skipping or running. Like I said get advice from your sports physician or pro coach. Not from amateurs on a forum... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y5jB0uZOrM[/ame]
So you have to learn a whole different technique for running if you want to have weights around your ankles? Can you explain what advantages running with weights around my ankles would give me over my opponenent? I don't think messed up knees is an advantage these days... I don't need to go and ask anyone, I already know that it's bad. Same as holding dumbbells in the hands while shadowboxing ****s up your elbows and shoulders unless you go slow but why would you do that for a sport where you need to train fast to be fast? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y5jB0uZOrM[/ame] You need to stop doing stupid things just because pros do it. You know why he does it? No? I bet he doesn't either.
Are you a boxer or pretender?? Obviously ankle weights dont work for you because your so defensive and been brainwashed that ankle weights are the enemy...If you don't know what your talking about leave it to the experts. My opinion is based on practical experience and expert advice. Not pretenders who search google all day to find an answer...
You've basically just told everyone how uneducated you are...I hope your not a boxer. If so, you better sack your trainer because someones giving you the wrong advice.
Try answering my questions... I'm a fitness instructor and personal trainer. I do boxing and kickboxing. None of my coaches recommend running with ankle weights and neither do I. The questions again - what advantages does running with ankle weights have? What is this technique I need to learn to run with ankle weights without ruining my knees? What wrong advice have I been given? Also, who is this "expert advice" from?
Are you really a qualified fitness instructor and personal trainer? Why are you still getting advice from your coaches on ankle weights or are you just making that up? Have you ever trained with ankle weights? If you are a qualified and experienced trainer you wouldn't say ankle weights and punching with weights will **** up your joints. Every bodys biomechanics, development structure etc are not the same. There are good and bad experiences from all different athletes. To say that ankle weights are "not good" or just plain bad for you shows your knowledge and inability to fully understand how to effectively use them. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, lebron James, Sugar Ray Leonard, Pacquio, Mayweather, a lot of the elite NBA players, sprinters, high jumpers have all used ankle weights to aid in their training. To assist with stamina, strengthening, resistance and short explosive plyrometrics, vertical leaps etc... If you are asking me questions/advice on technique, training etc...you shouldn't be a personal trainer!
You'd be suprised what you can learn by asking simple questions. Are you seriously asking me why I asked my boxing coach a question? Ankle and wrist weights are designed to add resistance to exercises, same as any other weights. They shouldn't be used to mess up your running mechanics and exert more pressure on your joints. If you want to continue to do so go ahead. Yes, I am a fitness instructor and a perosnal trainer and yes I do say wearing ankle weights while running and holding dumbbells while punching ****s up your joints. I didn't say they are not good, I know how to effectively use ankle and wrist weights. I said wearing them while running is not a good idea. This is about running with ankle weights on, don't try and change the subject. Find a video of one of these guys running with ankle weights on. That video of Maywether shows him wearing ankle weights but at no point is he running with them on. I haven't asked you for advice, I've asked you very simple questions as to why you wear ankle weights while you run. Since you keep avoiding the questions I'm guessing you can't answer them, therefore you have no clue.
As your questions don't validate credibility, you need to read the whole thread again...look at your answers, do your due diligence before you start giving false inaccurate info to those on the forum and your clients...if any. And thats all folks!
