yeah, louis was great at hitting the nail on the head... both with his words, and in the ring. precision and efficiency ran through his veins - apart from when it came to money!

this is a very good pick. that comment invoked an awkward kind of sadness - the worst kind.

so is this. hearns, bullied as a kid, released from the shackles as a boxer, stardom>acceptance>greatness... but then quickly reminded of his subordinate role in life. heart-wrenching.

    Johnny Owens vs Lupe Pintor.

Johnny, really a Johnny B Goode kid.
And Lupe, another good guy, was a wreck after that tragedy.

Also, saw Muhammad Ali walk into a reception last night.........boxing takes no prisoners.

I don't get the Ali defeat by Holmes as being sad? He was paid a lot of money, chose to do it and then fought again after. If he was forced to it would be different.

The sad stories are those which result in death or severe injury such as Eubanks Vs Watson. Boxer's know the risks but to see it actually occur is a tragedy for the fighter and the sport.

The first one when he is lifeless against the ropes, and when he sits the count out in the rematch... oh man thats sad.

Ezzard Charles fighting as a washed up ex-heavyweight champ in the first stages of a dehabilitating disease and being threatened with his license being revoked and accused of not having heart. Now thats sad to me.

"Blackjack" Billy Fox was another sad story in the sport. He had a built-up record but eventually realized that his skills weren't what they were made out to be, and suffered several devastating losses, the most embarrassing when reigning champion Gus Lesnevich devastated him in a round. After being used by the mob, he was abandoned to poverty and ended up in a mental hospital while relatively young. I believe he is still alive to this date.

However, he seemed to enjoy life and stayed cheery till the end. He seemed so determined to beat his disease also.

This is an indelible moment with a haunted man.

Was walking with Gabe Ruelas at Staples Center long after his ring days. With his clark Kent glasses and pocket protector, he was all-but-invisible to fans rushing to the box office.

When I asked what hurt him most, his eyes were vacant, his voice soft: "When I tried to comfort Jimmy Garcia's mother at the hospital, 'n she moved back: 'Don't touch me with those hands that killed my son'

Jerry Quarry taking a one-sided beating and cut badly against Frazier in their second fight, with the crowd shouting at a confused referee Joe Louis to stop it. Frazier tried to get Louis to stop it, too.

Quarry should have retired right there and he might still be with us.

For me ill have to say Joppy/Duran..... He threw a couple good moves on Joppy early but was overwhelmed and beaten up by a guy that shouldnt be mentioned in the same sentence.
