Pauile Mags claimed he saw holes in the armor of Salvador Sanchez when he saw the Patrick Ford fight. Paulie doesn't consider Sanchez as the ATG of Mexican boxing, he likes JC Chavez for that crown. What do you guys think? Did Sanchez look invincible in this fight? This content is protected This content is protected
I don´t know of anybody that puts Chavez below Sanchez. In here, I will bet, most put Olivares and Saldivar above Sanchez... Overrated by whom ? Of course Sanchez could have been exposed if he didnt die so early... we will never know though, maybe he would have evolved before somebody picked that and exploited... Paulie, I like Paulie, but sometimes he overthinks stuff...
We had one not that long ago, about a mexican list... https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/the-top-10-mexican-fighters-in-history.720361/ I think I would put Sanchez as the number 2... but Saldivar and Olivares could just as easily be placed above him...
Title is wrong BTW but what people have to realize is Patrick Ford was a bit of a freak at the weight he was 5'10 with a 73 inch reach I think alot of fighters would struggle against a solid Featherweight with those dimensions. It took Pedroza 13 rounds to get rid of Ford and that was the best performance of his career.
Yeah he ain’t as great as some say but he was a really awesome featherweight, but his skill and ranking among the best from Mexico can be greatly overstated. We saw his prime and it was contested by a novice Azuhma.
Even I don't think he's the Mexican all-time best. Paulie is just trying to get clicks with videos like this. Sanchez didn't look great that night. It happens.
Seems like a lot of boxers hold Salvador Sanchez in very high esteem. I heard James Toney and Roy Jones mentioned him among the best fighters of all time period, not just Mexican fighters.
What a lot of people don’t know, is that when Sanchez fought Ford, his feet were in terrible condition. I’ll have to find the exact article, but a commission member who’d been taking Sanchez around to appointments that week said after the fight Sanchez requested some sandals and he sat there and his feet had blisters “like nickels” and he said if he’d have seen his feet before, he’d have not let Sanchez fight. But Sanchez was sort of a no-excuses kind of guy and just got on with it. Same with the Nelson fight, he never said anything, but Juan LaPorte (who was friendly with Sal) told me that Sanchez had a pretty rough car accident nine days before the Nelson fight and had a pretty big bump on the back of his head but just got on with it. Ford had an awkward style and huge dimensions for a featherweight so it was a more difficult fight than anticipated. Ford was busy but he missed a lot, but even inside Sanchez wasn’t quite as affective as you’d expect although I felt he took over down the stretch and earned the win. I think you’ll notice, he became an even more rounded and better fighter after this fight such was his brain and ability to adapt and improve.
Nelson was young when he challenged Sanchez but also that worked both ways. Azumah was skyhigh going in against a great champion..for Salvador it was just another title defense against an unknown challenger. He knew nothing about Nelson. He paid to learn but as the end of the day Azumah knew who the Professor really was.
I agree with Vic on this one. I have Sanchez as the number 2 Mexican FW behind Saldivar. I’m pretty sure we have done a thread a few years back ranking Mexican fighters. Sanchez does fare well…because he is great. Can’t remember my list but I imagine he was in my 5 range
On a quick search I had him in the 4 spot and likely still do. No poll but some lists and discussions https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/top-10-mexican-fighters-of-all-time.618999/
