With regard to the Johnson Hart fight: A number of papers said tha tht verdict was fair though a lot disagreed with it. The papers that backed the verdict said that it was a close fight while those that disagreed with it were much stronger in their assesment. Obviously there is no film of the fight. Therfore we must regard it as a questionable decision, though I would not put it in stronger terms than that.

Sounds like someone has this on tape. I guess we should go ahead and reverse every decision wherein a black fighter loses to a white fighter pre-1940. Seems like that's the consensus anyways.
---that's another, major, problem with including fighters from before the Walker Law of 1920 into P4P rankings. You just can't trust the results. There are too many shady fights. Hell, even Sam Langford was known as a tanker. Which begs the question, which fights did he tank? At least several with other black fighters of the era -they had to eat and to eat they had to generate rivalries that seemed legit. This is not to say that post-1920 brought boxing into the bright lights of law and order, it is to say that things got better...! It used to be an unregulated sport that had both feet in the shade.
I totally agree. However, this does not give an ersatz victory to Johnson in the case. What we know is that a rather underwhelming heavyweight took Johnson the distance and did enough to make the case for victory. By all accounts this fight was no out and out robbery and no one went into the tank. Johnson later stated in a Fleischer interview that Hart had given him a very tough and unexpected fight, and didn't dispute the verdict.
Sammy was so hard up for fights he would tank to create a rematch only to reek bloody havoc on the fellow. Gunboat smith give a fine account of sam doing this to him in peter hellers book. Said he never felt the same after sam unloaded on him. Gunboat was a tough fighter in his prime too
