Here's the weird thing, and it definitely goes against A>B>C logic, but it's my gut feeling: Cotto would begin to dominate and eventually TKO Chavez Jr. late, after some rough patches. Alvarez would completely toy with Chavez and knock him out by the 5th round. Cotto would edge out a close war and maybe stop Alvarez in the championship rounds (otherwise winning a clear decision).
I believe so as well. Cotto isn't the same guy he used to be, but Alvarez is very young and we've seen him have some troubles against much lesser opposition. Cotto can probably steamroll him ala Cotto vs. Quintana.
No, you forget the point. The thread starter states, "Does he have a chance against Cotto?" This thread isn't asking whether it would be a "****ing battle". It's asking whether Alvarez would "have a chance against Cotto".
Cotto would school him unless Alvarez landed one of those hayemakers to his jaw. In 2-3 years Cotto will be 110% shot and washed up with zero punch resistance.
Alvarez is very similar style wise to a prime Cotto, but at this point Alvarez only has a puncher's chance. Not ready for the more experienced, battle tested Cotto. Even against great puncher's like Pacman and Margarito, Cotto lasted pretty much almost the whole fight. Even if at this point Canelo had a power adv, Cotto should be able to eat up his best shots, maybe even dropped, but Canelo won't be able to take Cotto's heavy shots. Canelo has a very good offense, but needs tons of help on the speed and defense departments. Since he's very similar to Cotto's style he should learn from Cotto's mistakes.
Too soon, too soon. Better not rush this kid into anything too big yet. He has great potential, but let it grow for a while. If he were to face Cotto now, he'd be absolutely destroyed, I'd bet my savings on it.
Whew, for a second I thought this fight was on. Damn, give Saul a chance to wade a bit before drowning the kid in the ocean of champions.
It would be Trinidad/Vargas all over again. Alvarez will have some moments, and could possibly win, but he isn't seasoned enough at this point to stay outta harm's way for too long. I fear that he would make the same mistake as Vargas as in trading for too long, or maybe moving too much. Slight edge to Cotto at this point. I don't see Cotto having any success in a year or two, he would be worn down and on the way out. He has taken a fair amount of punishment before and after Margarito.
