When was Ezzard Charles Really a lightheavyweight?

I would class him as the best lightheavyweight in the heavyweight division. He fought a lot of lightheavyweights and they all fought and heavyweights together.

Charles might have weighed 175lb but he wasn’t exclusively a lightheavyweight more than a few months when he came out of the army.

Before the war Ezzard was below the lightheavyweight limit.

Actually, Conn might be the best answer. I don't know why I didn't think about him before. He had all the tools to outbox peak Ezzard. Whether he would is a different matter, but along with Tunney these two have the highest chance.

I actually disagree, I'll have to rewatch Conn vs Louis, but Charles looked like the quicker fighter and he could hit harder, tho I'm not writing Conn off, but I think Ezzard has the better footwork as well. Billy would make Ezz struggle with his defence but it's probably a 60-40 fight in Ezzard's favour imo. Both gets wins in a series type of thing

Tunney is an excellent fighter, but I think Ezz has him, his body shots would be troublesome but other than that I think Ezzard does everything better except being a ring general, which is the reason the fight isn't a miss match. Tunney has one of the highest ring IQs ever, and would have a real good game plan, but i don't think he'd get in done, at least the first time.

As for his hardest Match ups, I'd pick Bob Foster and Fitzsimmons

Very hard to pick for me. Conn was extremely quick and his head movement was outstanding. Maybe you are right, but I'm not sure that one is clearly faster than the other.
I think that Gene has a bit better jab, but I can be wrong. I'm far from a boxing expert, you probably know much more about the sport than me.

I agree, I don't how I forgot tbh, I'd put that under ring generalship myself.
    Same here pal
Why thank you, but from reading your posts you clearly have a better grasp pre 1900

Gene Tunny, Archie Moore and maybe Billy Conn and Michael Spinks.

Moore didn't manage it on 3 attempts
As for Spinks, here's a post from a few weeks ago in

The third was the classic one where Moore had Charles hurt at the end of the 7th and went in to finish him in the 8th, Charles suckered Moore in and put him out cold.

If there was film available of that, it would be tremendous to see.

How about Langford? He was the man who outboxed arguably the greatest fighter at lightweight when he was a novice and he had a punch that regulary knocked out cold durable heavyweights. Unlike Fitzsimmons, we have a little footage with him from more than one prime fight. He didn't fight at LHW but he was the best around 175 lbs.

Do you think that he could outfight peak Ezzard?

The distinction is certainly not helped by the fact that Charles never fought for the light-heavyweight title and won the heavyweight title at the end of the 40s.

But I guess heavyweight was anything above 175 at that time so the distinction between the two divisions was less clear. Still, he beat the cream of the crop of that division, including Moore, in and around the light-heavyweight limit so I think it's fair to rate him there.

LHW is within reach of Harry Greb. I might pick him.

Can't think of any recent guys that I'd pick over Charles.

Kovalev might put up a stiff challenge if we're talking his best version as opposed to the semi-shot version we have today.

Maybe Bob Foster? He's as unpleasant a guy to fight at 175 as I can think of.

The most recent guys I'd give a more than 25% chance against Charles are

    Jones Jr (35% to 40%)
    Michalczewski (30%)
    Tarver (30ish%)
    Stevenson and Kovelev (25%)

I'd have to study and compare their styles to put a percentage on it. That said, those names are good shout outs.

Yeah, Greb was so insane that he would probaby beat him. He wouldn't outbox him and he wouldn't KO him but he would still beat him. That's just who he was.
