Sergio Martinez wants drug testing, Chavez jr. rejects it

Middleweight king Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28KOs) has been hunting for a shot at WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31KOs) - and both sides have discussed the possibility of a fight for September 15th in Las Vegas. But now Martinez has a thrown a new angle in mix, as the Argentine fighter wants an Olympic drug testing protocol to be involved in his fight with Chavez.

Speaking to the scene, Martinez indicates there are no issues related to the money and everything appears to be in order, but Julio must accept the involvement of a random drug testing protocol. According to Martinez, Julio has rejected the idea of Olympic testing and wants the local commission, in Las Vegas or otherwise, to handle the testing regulations of both boxers.

"Regarding the percentages, there is no problem. I've seen their terms and I've put in mine and I only have one - to have Olympic style anti-doping tests. [If we agree on that], I'll accept whatever," Martinez said. "I also want that fight in September, and I'm sure that I'm going to knock him out."

"I am interested in Chávez's title. If it becomes vacant, then I will go after another opponent. I'm going to talk to my handlers and we'll see what direction to take [regarding Chavez's June fight]. We have to think carefully about what want to do," Martinez said.

Let's see. Martinez is mandatory. He has agreed to everything but he has one "demand". (Well, his words but he then throws in the month as another but we'll let that slide for now). He will push the WBC to strip Jr, if he (Martinez) turns down the fight over this as he says he will do? I'm a little rusty on my geography, remind me again what planet Argentina is on? As I see it Martinez has no right to retain his mandatory challenger status if he turns down the fight for this one reason since there are already testing standards in place. Adequacy and enforcement won't be allowed as an argument by the WBC. Especially for Jr. I have always thought Martinez was being over rated, but not nearly as much as Jr. so I'm really puzzled by this development and I now question Sergio really wanting this fight.

 

You do know that Chavez is a proven drug cheat, and famously bailed out on his post fight test for the Rubio fight, right?

He take diuretics to flush his system of water and drain down to 160. Steroids don't put weight on that quickly.

 

Not even close to the point. The WBC has nothing in their bylaws that say they can strip Jr for not agreeing to this. Not that the WBC is any paragon of virtue and wouldn't bend over backwards to keep him as champion. The point is Martinez HAS to know that this demand is meaningless and Jr won't get stripped over it. The only thing happening here is Martinez is giving the WBC a reason to declare his mandatory status null and void. That is what puzzles me and makes me wonder if Martinez really wants the fight or if Arum called his bluff. Until now I thought Martinez would beat him.
