Macklin 100% nailed it there, he knows his stuff. I remember when Hearn first left sky for Dazn he was hinting at big news about a highlights type programme on the BBC or something but it never materialised. Sky will always be king with their platform of other sports, sky sports news etc even with how crap their stable and shows are at the moment
DAZN - 75k UK subscribers Sky - 12.7 million UK subscribers Hearn also failed to secure the deal with BT he was clearly banking on as that would have secured premiership football. Which lets face it, is make or break if you want a successful sports network in this country. Like Maklin says in that interview, a boxing only platform is just too niche and won't work, no matter how much you want it to. Plus it's not like it hasn't been tried before. I know it's still early days for DAZN, but I think the writing is already on the wall, at least for the UK.
It’s barely 6 months in tbf. If they secure some football rights in the next few years they’ll be okay.
If it's true what you write that DAZN UK has 75000 subscribers then it's not very impressive. BoxNation had 300000.
Through my work in the media world, I have met a lot of boxing promoters, including Cedric Kushner. He had no charisma, did not speak very well etc. but he was successful as a boxing promoter. My point is that you do not have to be a handsome man with the gifts of speech but it helps of course.
We are all used to Eddie Hearn who is full of enthusiasm and has charisma but is also a salesman who can BS and oversell things. Ben seems like an honest guy and although not as out there as Eddie it’s good to have more competition out there
They've got one thing in common - losing fortunes and needing a lot of investment. DAZN UK is both a supplier of content to the DAZN group globally - given UK boxing is a hot commodity just now - and a channel growing in its own right. I would imagine given $1.1 billion losses within the group to the end of 2020, losses suffered by the UK division won't trouble the company that much.
