Has anyone here moved into a sharehouse in sydney?

Considering doing it as i scored a new job and the travel is too far to come back west each day.

    Any stories on sharehouses?

Even the very best available Sydney sharehouse will be a step down in the world from Kronkton!

I share housed in Sydney for 5 years. Live with gf now in Marrickville. Have lived in Redfern, Coogee, Erskineville and Newtown and they're all good suburbs with everything you need.

Can't say much on moving in with randoms though - always lived with long term friends and such. The odd random here and there. The key is to just find people with similar attitude/outlook as you.

If I do move with randoms, I always ensure we go for a beer before I say yes/no. Best way to get to know people. Make sure you're doing what you'd normally be doing and don't put on a 'show' when interviewing etc. Gotta be yourself and hope they are being themselves too when you're sussing each other out.

    Good luck!

I'd say pretty much what PorkChop said, go for a couple of beers first and be yourself, but finding good people to live with can be difficult. On the plus side you get have lots of beer!

i share with a mate now, and its great. Before that i lived with randoms in Glebe, Balmain, Pyrmont and Chatswood. Just find chilled out people, avoid living with couples and dont ever move in with people who are associated with drugs etc. Ideally you want someone like yourself who doesnt bring home dodgy ass mates all the time and wont go ape **** about an unwashed plate. Students are the worst.

Use gumtree or whatever its called and flatmatefinder etc and as PCE said, have a beer with them and ask PLENTY of questions. Nothing worse than moving in somewhere you hate from the get go

    Thanks alot guys.

Im thinking of moving to around newtown area, or somewhere that distance or closer to the city.
Im spewing all my mates are tradies who wont live near the city.
So ill keep checking out some places and try to organise a beer or two.

Whats the worst things about students?

Also whats the deal, do you's share all the food and cooking, or is it everyones own thing. or just depends where u go.

Also do you guys recomend any other suburbs or would newtown be alright?

    Thanks again everyone:good

Personally I love the inner west. And not because it's "cool man". You can't go wrong really. Erskineville is the best suburb for living in Sydney imo (granted I haven't been EVERYWHERE) but it's just perfect. Just a bit exxy. As is Newtown.

The suburbs surrounding these areas are a bit cheaper but essentially just as close to the city. Alexandria, Redfern, Marrickville, Petersham etc.

If you know the right way to go, you can get to the city quick, the beach quick etc. Nothing seems too far. Only prob with Newtown is traffic. King St can be among the worst streets in the city. If you can afford it man, have a look in Erko. It's honestly just awesome. Great pubs, great food and great people.

As for living arrangements - as I said, I've always lived with close mates so some times we'd shop/cook together, others it's everyone for them self. Just depended on the day. If you get easy going people like that, kudos to you, but chances are with randoms that'll take time.

Essentially if I was to move out into a sharehouse and I didn't know the people, I'd be looking for easy going people, don't mind socialising or having people over, but don't do it EVERY night. I can't live with extremely anal people either - that's the worst.

With students, I find the older ones are okay, but it can just get awkward like, when you want mates over to watch a fight Sunday but they have to study n ****, it can get awkward. But never had that prob myself.

Heh, haven't thought about this stuff in years. I've lived with friends for the most part of the last 10 years but when I was in London I lived in 7 places & suburbs in 3 years and some times with randoms.

Moved in with one Saffa dude, was hell racist and we lived in Tooting Broadway (real muslim community) and not long after the London bombings, the stupid ******* had a National Party (like a Pauline Hanson party, but more blatantly racist) address blasting off live radio out his window on to the street after I got home. Told him to turn it off, he didn't, threatened to put the radio and the entire national party up his ass if he didn't. Got heated, he ended up with a busted nose, black eye and about 1 million peices of radio after that. He was with out doubt the biggest c*nt I've ever lived with... not just for those reasons either. Needless to say, he was out of there soon enough.

I misread the title and clicked on this thread because I thought it was about "Steakhouses Sydney". Disappointed.

Well then, speaking of steaks, anyone here done the Tomohawk in Sydney? Got the hat to prove it?

It's like 1.5 kilo T-Bone. If you finish you get a commemorative hat and the 'tomahawk' bone left over. Gotta order it like 3 days in advance so they can prep it n ****. Going in a few weeks. Yeah!

As others have mentioned, gumtree is a good bet and def meet the people first. Number one other thing is NO COUPLES! The area around Randwick has a load of share houses on the go, and its an easy commute in to town.

Also I personally would avoid living with a bunch of overseas people that are just here for a year or so. They tend to **** off at a minutes notice and leave you in the lurch. And always make sure you get on the lease IMO

Read John Birminghams 'He Died With A Felafel In His Hand'. Forget the movie. Sums up every experince I had in share housing over ten years.
