Carnera's credability was badly hit by Leon See's book detailing the fixing of many of his early fights. Personally I think he became a fairly good boxer and used his size advantage well eventually, but was a bit dodgy in the whiskers and lacked a big punch. He was one of the bravest of champions and was used and abused. Having said all that, the ko looks legit to me despite nagging doubts.
There was no strong movement to ban boxing.apart form a momentary , knee jerk reaction in NY State ,there was a movement to create a dreadnought division, for giants like Carnera to work in.How ridiculous this idea was, became apparent when Baer wrecked Carnera with such ease.
The KO was real. Sharkey was past his best even when he won the title from Schmeling with that dodgy decision, and the Carnera defence was 12 months later still. I guess he took Carnera a bit lightly. Carnera had improved 100% since he'd last faced Sharkey (he'd fought a busy schedule in the meantime).
Oh c'mon he was catching him with the kitchen sink, crossses ,hooks you name it.My point was not whether Sharkey was kod by uppercuts in other fights but whether a fighter reacted the same after being kod with one. Sharkey's reaction to Carnera's sweeping ko uppercut looks theatrical to me. I said I hadnt seen it's replica, and I still havent
First apologies for my rudeness . Now. Robinson in 47 ,Lesnevich won the award, and probably rightly. Charles in 48 ,you are probably right here I think he looks to have done enough to win the award 7 fights ,with Ray, Bivins and Moore among his wins, no title fights though ,possibly that had a bearing? Ramos in 63 .4 fights 1 defence , only King was quality. Beccerra in 59 7 fights but no chance against Johannson the winner. Griffith in 62 ? It went to Tiger ,arguable imo.
I have seen the reverse angle KO. It was a real head snapper. No fix here. Jack Sharkey was bothered by Carnea's size, and never took the best punch to begin with.
Carnera was a second rater built up by the mob on fixes and very light touches. He could not crack an egg as far as power goes. You cannot find another bout where he actually knocks someone out. The punch looks like a complete dive to me if you watch Sharkey's legs. ..Anything is possible. It is possible that Carnera threw the only KO punch of his career in a title winning bout. However, it is far more likely Sharkey took a dive and that is what I believe.
He wasn't bothered by Carnera's size in their first fight , ,and dropped him during the fight, for an easy win.
Sharkey was actually overpowered and knocked down a bit earlier on in the same round, though it might have been a partial slipped. Still he was being bothered by Carnera's strength and aggression. Then just before the KO he hits Carnera with a big overhand right and tries to follow up with another before Carnera ties him up. Funny that Sharkey would be throwing such hard shots at a man he already knew could be easily knocked down IF he was trying to lose the fight.
No doubt Carnera had improved ,whether it was on the up and up ,we will probably never know,as far as I am concerned ,the jury is still out.
1. "First apologies"--Accepted. And I apologize for being so snitty. 2. Ramos--Ali won with wins over Powell, Jones, and Cooper, and one could argue he was not all that impressive against Jones and Cooper. Ramos not only defended against King, but won the title that year from the very respected Davey Moore. I honestly think Ramos would probably have been fighter of the year if Moore hadn't died. 3. Robinson and Becerra probably wouldn't have won the award regardless. In a fairer world, Becerra would have been a strong contender, but if a bigger man does anything as noteworthy as Johansson did, he beats out a bantam. 4. Charles and Griffith had strong arguments.
