John Conteh and Paul Hodkinson Liverpool fighters were more memorable to me but Shea Neary put on some good displays, never saw much more of him though.
My old fella trained him along with George Schofield for his first few fights. I remember asking him what Neary was like. His exact words were "He's a ****ing hard man"
Must of been a pleasure to of been in the flesh to of seen that fight. Not a fight i ever forget. He's right mate..Neary was teek tough and loved trench warfare..Neary could been what Gatti was to Ward...he was beating him up to the stoppage.
That was ringside at the Joey Froat fight but I was at the the Neary vs Holligan fight aswell. What a fight and a great atmosphere that was.
Apparently after a few jobs in Liverpool he had to pack up work due to a problem with his knee, 4 operations and a rebuild. He'smarried with 4 kids and 3 grandkids. Great puncher!!
The reception he got at Goodison when he came on the pitch with the WBU Belt was absolutely immense. I know it's an organisation that gets **** on (and rightly so), but I'll always think of him as our World Champion.
