Tyson outjabbed other tall fighters as well. Though his jab was not his primary weapon Tysons skill with the jab when he used it earns him consideration for discussion.

Tyson was never going to stick and move he was 5,10 going up against 6,4 6,5 fighters but he was able to outjab fighters significantly taller then him when the situation warranted it.

Would LaMotta qualify? Not a 'boxer' per se, in the true tradition I know, but he wasn't a slob.

Toney only had a 72inch reach, which is tiny at HW, it wasnt a big reach at 160-190 either

unskilled is a little harsh, but i think i understand what mantequila ment in that although marciano had skills, he was more known for demolishing his opponents instead of outboxing them

marciano was great fighter, but i was thinking of the fighters with more stick and move techniques

my thinking was that it must be such a fantastic advantage if your looking to outbox a opponent when you have a superior wingspan that it shows the true science of boxing for a shorter armed fighter to be a successful fighter that can jab, give angles and utalize good footwork to outbox fighters that would normally hit him in areas that he would not be able to do like wise.

I used to think the same thing, mostly because that's what I had heard and had not seen much of his fights, just short clips. Then I watched more Marciano, and then watched again and again. He was not a traditional "skilled boxer", or pretty doing his thing, but his unflattering style had plenty of skill to go along with his power.

Some poster did a slow motion analysis of Rock a couple months ago. It is a great piece. You can maybe find it on utube.

He was involved in the sport of boxing. He was undefeated at the highest level in this undertaking. Ergo, he was a great, even spectacular, boxer.

If you mean slickster, stick and move guy, runner.... just say so. If you mean boxer then you mean someone who excelled in boxing, and Marciano is over-qualified.

Watch him closely, there is a lot of science going on. Very small target who made himself smaller and set up his punches wonderfully. Real short prime, but as a way undersized heavy who had to use dramatic swings of back and hips that came with the territory.

i was joking.Just forgot to put a smilie the first time.

The real point was he's not the kind of fighter right hand was looking for.

Edmundo Esparza would fall into this category. Short and squat he was nevertheless a very clever boxer who managed some good wins during his career the most notable being one against a young Harada in Japan.

The whole point of the thread is based on the fact that there were similarly short (and shorter) boxers who DID stick and move.

Miguel Cotto has a frighteningly effective jab and so to did Mike Tyson.

Also when he used to use it the king of the T-Rex arms in Ricky Hatton had a good jab, which he has chose to neglect it since the Tszyu fight.
