Should BMI be incorporated as a major boxing statistic?

BMI mixes height and weight and tells you if a fighter is skinny for their height. Whereas now the fan is left with the height and weight and to make of that what they will.

What do you guys think?

 

It usually doesn't mean much in boxing unless you're out of shape

 

I mean if that is a statistic you are interested in, and you have a primary school education and can use a calculator, then you can easily calculate BMIs yourself. As a metric relevant to boxing I feel BMI is limited; we have seen many times power and strength does not necessarily correlate to muscle density.

 

I was thinking more of it being used as a stamina and speed statistic.

 

No because it isn't accurate for elite level athletes

According to the calculator Holyfield was overweight, and even funnier Lee Priest was obese at his contest weight

The calculator says Fury was obese at 280 though, which is accurate

 

BMI is not a proper measure of elite athletes, as you can get guys with visible abs who are considered obese under the chart.

easy example — Mike Tyson would even in his absolute prime be considered obese on a BMI chart. Even though he was jacked with visible abs.

 

What next! Shoe size? Blood pressure?

 

Body Fat% yes, BMI no. AJ is technically obese by BMI standards

At the heaviest weight of his career AJ was 0.5 short of obesity by BMI. He would have needed to be 260.

What would constitute a good BMI in boxing would be how it compares to other fighters. The labellings of obese and overweight are not part of the statistic they are an opinion. For HWs it seems above a 30 is bad and below a 28 is good.

Tale of the tape used to have stuff like neck, chest, fist, bicep, waist

I can't remember the last time I saw a super detailed one that was more than height, weight and reach

 

There's another physical measurement someone like Fury would like to see.
