Negative, but he should have been warned or docked a point. I know it wasn't an intentional foul though.

I really don't think this was like the RJJ DQ at all.

Griffin was stumbling all over the ring for about 20 seconds just barely hanging on before finally dropping to his knee and bending his head way down toward the canvas. Then after he was clearly down for 1-2 seconds RJJ starts a NEW barrage of punches, throwing TWO more shots before being stopped.

The Lemieux knee was really sudden and clearly GGG, who was already coming forward punching, didn't expect him to go down there. If Lemmy acted it up and pretended to be KO'd there it could have been DQ time for GGG.

As it played out, a point deduction and extra time probably would have been appropriate.

I posted this yesterday....don't know how to imbed, but it's a video of Ingemar Johansson KOing Eddie Machen. From 1:33 onwards, Ingo beats the **** out of Machen and lands numerous shots to the head when Machen was on one knee or two knees.

There is not a single punch landed while he's on a knee in that video. The barrage before the final KO his knees are bent and he's in a sitting position leaning against the ropes but his knees are not touching the ground. Modern day ref would have jumped in and stopped it there though.

His glove is on the canvas during the barrage of the last knockdown, but true his knees weren't touching the canvas.

That idiot ref was still counting while Machen was unconscious.

I think back then the ref would finish the count even if the guy's head got separated from his body.

    The good ol' days!

He should have been docked a point or two, and given Lemieux time to recover. But not DQ'd.
    Wouldnt have changed outcome.

No, Golovkin shouldn't have been disqualified. He should have been deducted a point though for a foul. The difference between Golovkin vs Lemieux and the other fights you mention are that the opponents were knocked out and unable to continue fighting after the foul. That's what lead to the DQs in those situations. Here Lemieux was able to continue, so it should have just been a point deduction.

Point deduction and 5 mins to Lemieux would have been proper. I was disappointed with the ref.

Point deduction and 5 mins, imo

DQ would have been excessive. Given that Lem said he was ok to continue.

Im pretty sure most examples given of dq are instances where the fighter felt or showed they could not go on.

    5 mins, point deduction.

    :deal

    My thoughts entirely.

As Rummy said, the fight was quite one sided, and Golovkin did look reasonably comfortable, but Lemieux should get some credit...

He tried to take the fight to Golovkin.

He had some success when he let his hands go.

With his power, he was always in the fight.

He never complained or made excuse's.

I wouldn't have thought it unfair if Golovkin had of been DQ'd, the punch was clearly pre meditated, it wasn't as if he caught Lemieux as he was falling.
