    Not this 9-9 **** again?

Never fail to be amazed how many people who claim to be knowledgable boxing fans lack basic knowledge of how to score a fight.

Official scorecards for Pacquiao vs. Cotto.

Note that Adalaide Byrd and Dave Moretti both felt that Cotto did enough to reverse the point deducted for the knockdown...and thus scored the round 10-9.

You should also note that Duane Ford disagreed and scored it 10-8.

10-8. And FFS there is no 9-9 round unless there are penalties.

that is a scorecard, but what I'm actually after is the rules of how to score.

We keep hearing 'it's a ten point system - someone has to get the ten points", but is this actually true in the scenario where a fighter is the victim of a flash knockdown and yet dominates the rest of the round?

Let's say for argument's sake this is what happened in round 3 of this fight.

It's not that I am disagreeing with you for no reason, it's just that before something becomes a 'fact' we should check first shouldn't we?

If we believe a knockdown automatically gives Pac the round and Cotto a point deduction, then that makes 10-8 to Pac.

If the round is scored 10-9 to Pac, I think you may be in the right ball park, but perhaps the wrong explanation.

I don't think the judges 're-add' the point deduction Cotto lost because of the knockdown. In fact, I think what they are going for is a drawn round. This would make it a 10-10 round, minus the point deduction for being knocked down, makes it 10-9 to Pac.

If I'm right by this, what they are saying is the round was evened out - Pac's knockdown was worth the same as Cotto's performance in the rest of the round - however the rules state a point must be deducted from a knockdown. Giving us the 10-9.

..or if we are to say Cotto dominated the round, this would give him a 10-9, but because he is knocked down, he gets a point deducted. 9-9.

...I'm yet to see the rules state you can't score a 9-9, I'm not saying you're wrong, I just like to get to the bottom of things and until I've seen proof, I'm going to be 'agnostic' on this opinion.

and BTW, if we want to be pedantic, being 'knocked down' is a kind of penalty - you get penalized a point deduction.

    Yes, that's actually true.

We did check it. Well most of us already knew how to score fights, so we set you straight. Someone posted you the actual scorecards which showed two judges gave the round 10-9 to Pacquiao on that very basis, whereas one gave it 10-8 to Pacquiao. You might also check out Cunningham v Adamek where there was an even clearer example, again scored 10-9 to Adamek by the judges. What you can't find is any examples of a judge scoring a round 9-9 in a round where the referee has not deducted points. And you can't find them because that would be completely incorrect.

You're not right, so all that is rubbish.

Pedantic maybe, but also wrong. A knockdown is included in the judges score for a round. A penalty is deducted afterwards - the score would still be the same, then there is a seperate box to count the deduction. Not the same thing at all.

The problem is that you're coming into a boxing forum, talking crap, and then demanding 'proof' when people patiently tell you that you're wrong. Try going on a football forum and telling people that a touchdown is worth 9 points and see what happens. I'm sure if you do a bit of research there are resources out there that you can use to learn how to score a fight.

your problem is your a little highly strung.

This forum is for airing opinions and discussing boxing - if that's too much for you, then don't post in the thread.

if you don't see the need for proof to things, then you are probably the sort of person who believes something must be right because enough people say it is. Questioning things is a positive trait to have.

I have yet to see the rules state you can't score a round 9-9. That's what all this boils down to. It's a very unlikely score. And considering there are plenty of people who think otherwise, it would be nice to see some proof to close this case once and for all.

If there's a knockdown and the downed fellow won the round in the judge's eyes if the KD is discounted, then the judge can score it 10-9 instead of 10-8. No 9-9 score applies here.

    Dude his response was perfect.

IN EVERY ROUND AT LEAST ONE FIGHTER MUST GET 10 POINTs.

That's it, it's over. There is no more to add.

point deductions from penalties come AFTER the round is scored, as they are not technically part of the round being judged. They are administered by the referee and the referee only, thus they are deducted after the round has been scored.

Yes but if you air an opinion that shows you lack knowledge of the sport you're discussing, it's only natural to expect some reaction.

Absolutely. And if you'd posted a thread that says 'I'm not sure how to score this example, can some of you more knowledgable people give me a few pointers', no doubt you would have got a more positive reaction. Instead you asserted something that was incorrect, made a poll that included one option that is impossible and excluded one that was possible, and got arsey when people pointed out your errors.

    How hard are you looking?

And the question has been answered. 9-9 is not a possible score, but it could be scored 10-8 or 10-9.

yes, I saw that, and that makes sense. I have to say I always thought the point was taken off in the round the penalty occurred. But from what you are saying if it is taken off after then that makes the whole mess a lot more clearer.:good
