take a Kneeguel Cotto like previous said. but in some cases, when the stoppage is terrible, 8 counts would be ok
Do you know of any commissions that still actively use it? I know it is gone in California, Nevada, and when using the Unified Rules.
Personally, I cannot remember the last time I even recall it showing up in the pre-fight rules and regs.
Problem here is that a fighter doesn't t usually have the time to think things thru. And in the situations where we see what we deem an early stoppage instead when a standing 8 may be in order, the fighter might not see himself as needing to take a knee.
It is just not in most fighters mentality to take a knee. Voluntarily going down just doesn't happen unless there is an injury (Ortiz) or something wrong (Cotto vs. Plaster). Then again, part of being a professional is knowing what it takes to succeed.
Agreed with the 1st statement. And although you may be right with the 2nd, how many knees do we actually see taken? It's just not something we see for whatever reason. I think most fighters think they can make it out of the round if given the chance.
I'm against it tbh. Taking a knee comes under the Ring IQ banner and if a fighter is too stupid or too macho to take a knee then it's his fault imo. Saturday was the perfect example. Also, i think it's a bit unfair on the fighter who is dishing out the attack at the time of a knee. If he's dished out enough punishment to warrant a standing count and is still in the process of handing it out to a standing fighter, the fight should be called off anyway for me.
It would eliminate bad stoppages. When a ref is uncertain if a fighter is badly hurt, he can call a standing eight instead of stopping the fight. If the fighter was badly hurt, he will most likely be TKOd eventually anyways.
Right. This is a fight. You simply take away advantage that a fighter has gained. It is unfair. Standing 8 means he can't continue without intervention. Fight should be over.
While not officially outlawed, it is not used by most commissions. Slowly but surely "No standing eight count" has become the common rule of the sport.
Yes, it should be used more, especially nowadays when refs are quicker to stop fights than they used to be. It gives the ref an out, if he's undecided. Now, he has to either let the fight go, and risk someone getting hurt, or stopping it - and potentially the guy isn't that bad and it all kicks off. It just gives the ref a chance to think. He can still stop the fight at the end of the standing 8 if he thinks the guys no good. I think it's a good thing to have personally.
I'm against the standing eight count. It makes it harder for a good ref to know what to do, and it makes it easier for a crooked ref to help a fighter out. (letting him rest when points no longer matter, or if the judges are in the bag.) Besides, a fighter can always just take a knee, as Lucian wrote.
