Up until the last couple of years, I would never have picked Showtime over HBO, but they are really trumping them in the quality of their fights.
I've become increasingly disillusioned with the now obvious lies that HBO has been spreading about its budget. More and more, they justify passing on bouts because of their supposidely exiguous boxing boxing. What is actually happening, though, is that they are diverting a larger and larger portion of said budget into their 24/7 boxing specials, which are really nothing more than commercials for their pay per view bouts. Obviously, they have discovered that pay per view is far more profitable and that they can trick people into believing they are still a boxing network if they show a few well-produced commercials instead of live bouts.
i'd even go as far as saying showtime's production is better than HBO's. the camera angles during froch-kessler were ridiculous.
Happily I'm getting on the UVerse and it's gonna be cheaper than what I pay now. Package deal, I get all the pay channels. Up til now we've been an HBO-only house but now I get to say HBO and Showtime!:good
Showtime does better with a smaller budget. They give focus to fighters in smaller weightclasses. HBO wouldn't touch someone like Vic Darchinyan because he is not in a 'glamorous' weight class to the casual viewer. They also have ShoBox as well, which develops younger fighters and gives prospects some exposure. HBO is more name driven and wastes so much money on bulls--t fights like Tarver/Dawson II and Floyd vs. Sharmba, among others. Their commentators are more annoying. I wish Steve Albert was back on Showtime instead of Gus Johnson though.
I just want to see good fights. I don't really care who broadcasts them. It doesn't take great production values, great commentary, or even great fighters to make great fights. What it takes is smart match making, and we do not see that consistently. Better, bolder, match making would improve the sport a lot.
Both are good. I prefer the HBO set up a bit more, but there's not much in it. Loving the Super 6 though, hope HBO do something to try to compete with it.
HBO has the star quality, but when it comes to genuine commitment to boxing entertainment, i put my faith in Showtime. I can't remember the last time i saw a fight below lightweight as a main event on HBO.
if Showtime didn't exist, we probably wouldn't have had the privilege of seeing Castillo/Corrales I and Marquez/Vazquez I-IV Showtime>>>HBO
